RAC Arena Becomes WA’s First Certified Green Venue

Perth's favourite indoor live entertainment venue has just scored a four-star sustainability rating — putting it level with the top-ranked venue in the country.

RAC Arena has been certified as a Green Venue under Green Music Australia’s national sustainability program, becoming the first venue in Western Australia to earn the recognition. The four-star rating it achieved matches ICC Sydney, currently the highest-ranked venue in the initiative.

Green Music Australia, National Programs Manager, Emma Bosworth commented, “What a pleasure to welcome RAC Arena to the outstanding group of East Coast venues participating in our Green Venue Certification. It’s great to see a venue implementing such a diverse range of waste streams, a powerful step towards reducing the amount of waste that goes into landfill. The reusable stack cups are a great visible reminder of the venue’s commitment to sustainability. Congratulations to the RAC Arena team on achieving 4 stars.”

What the green venue certification measures

Green Music Australia launched the Green Venue Certification program in 2025 to assess and reward venues that are making genuine environmental progress. Participating venues are assessed across energy, waste, water, food and drinks, and procurement — then assigned a star rating based on their performance.

RAC Arena’s certification was driven largely by its waste management results. Working through an in-house sustainability group called the Eco Champs, alongside the waste management company WRITE Solutions, the arena developed a waste management roadmap that has exceeded its targets. Since the start of 2026, RAC Arena has diverted more than 98% of its waste by volume from landfill — exceeding its goal of 70%.

The initiatives behind the numbers

The arena’s waste diversion performance stems from a combination of measures developed over several years. Stack Cups — reusable cups designed to stack for easier handling — have been in use at RAC Arena’s bar outlets since 2019. Compostable packaging has since been introduced alongside green bins to capture organic waste.

In 2021, the venue added Containers for Change to its operations, and the scheme has since generated over $100,000 in donations to charity partners, including the Salvation Army WA.

General Manager Michael Scott said the certification reflects a broader commitment the venue has been building on for years. “This achievement highlights the arena’s exceptional environmental strategies and initiatives, and our ambitious plan to set the new standard for sustainability excellence in the live entertainment industry in Perth and beyond.”

RAC Arena is managed by Legends Global on behalf of VenuesWest, and is home to the Perth Wildcats, West Coast Fever, and the United Cup tennis tournament, alongside its live music and entertainment calendar.
