State Government To Trial New Safety Camera Trailers

New cameras are coming to WA roads to combat mobile phone use while driving.

The WA State Government has announced that new cutting-edge, world-first safety cameras will commence operations on WA roads in 2025. These cameras can an identify a number of high-risk driver behaviours simultaneously including illegal mobile phone use, seatbelt offences, and speeding.

Six mobile safety camera trailers will be introduced over the next six months, along with upgrades to fixed cameras at two sites on the Kwinana Freeway.

Road Safety Minister David Michael said, “Western Australian drivers need to realise it is only a matter of time before they are caught and fined for driving distracted or not wearing a seatbelt.”

“We’re cracking down on those flouting the law with new ‘anywhere, anytime’ high-tech safety cameras.”

From January 26th, drivers detected committing a mobile phone or seatbelt offence by the new safety cameras will receive a caution notice instead of a fine. The caution notice will inform them of the new camera capabilities and encourage them to adopt safer driving behaviour before the enforcement of fines commences.

The safety camera program is funded through the Road Trauma Trust Account, which sees 100 per cent of safety camera infringement revenue allocated to projects and programs which reduce injuries and deaths on WA roads.

Minister David Michael added, “The message is clear and simple: these cameras are coming, slow down, buckle up and put your phone away.”
