Top spots to catch some laughs in Perth.

Comedy is big in Perth – from LA’s Comedy Store to Melbourne’s Comic Lounge, most of us have heard of the hubs of laughs making names for themselves the world over.

But ask the average Perth person for just one spot to see comedy in their own city and you’ll probably draw blank stares.

The funny thing is, the comedy scene in our own little home is blossoming, with new rooms seemingly popping up every other month.

So in an effort to keep up, and to nullify that dumbfounded blank stare sweeping our city when anyone is asked where they can go for a spot of entertainment, here are the top 10 comedy rooms around Perth.

1. Comedy Lounge

This one you should have heard of. Come on guys. It’s the Comedy lounge, Perth’s first purpose-build comedy venue right in the heart of our city. THE NAME IS LITERALLY BEAMED ONTO THE PAVEMENT ON MURRY STREET.

This venue is bursting with acts and events, from the Gong Show on Thursdays, to Comedy Karaoke on Fridays, stepping foot in this place will instil you with hope for entertainment in Perth.

2. Lazy Susan’s Comedy Den

Upstairs above the Brisbane Hotel is one of Perth’s most loved comedy venues, which has been running for 15 years.

That’s right, you’ve had 15 years to discover this place.

From hosting the city’s best improvisers – The Big Hoo Ha every Saturday, to experimental open-mic comedy night, Shapiros, on Tuesdays, this intimate room has been bursting with laughs for years and will certainly be doing so for years more.

3. Laugh Resort

Laugh Resort incorporated back in the 90s, this comedy club has been proudly run by the comedy industry for the comedy industry.

Nowadays it consists of monthly shows at the Shoe Bar in Yagan Square, with a lineup boasting some of the best new talents in the State and even country (you don’t run a comedy club for three decades without making some connections).

4. Fremantle Comedy Factory

All that bragged about culture and art in Fremantle has got to come to something and one of those somethings is the Comedy Factory, above the Sail and Anchor.

Bringing the goods every Thursday night, this room is always has a crammed lineup of talented comics and once a month hosts an all-female night or a Hersday to get more women on stage.

5. Flying Camel Comedy

Running out of the Bassendean Hotel on Wednesday nights, this raucous comedy club the Flying Camel Comedy really makes use of that pub feel, with comics unafraid to chat to audiences and joke about everything and anything to squeeze out those laughs.

6. Oceans 6019: Comedy for a Cause

Right on Scarborough beach, comedy runs in Oceans 6019 venue every second Thursday from 8pm.

Raising money for the leukemia foundation, the event is actually free entry, just with collection tubs within. This is another room where comics aren’t afraid to chat to the audience, and it’s almost a necessity as there are some nights they get down off the stage to be on ground level with them.

But never fear, it’s almost always to make fun of themselves more than you.

7. Canned Comedy

Another comedy club doing good things is Canned Comedy, thus named because you bring a can of food along with you to the event to raise money for Foodbank.

Run by Sean Conway, who some of you may remember as the Unsung Docker, this club runs out of Piper’s Inn in Mandurah on the first Monday of the month and out of the Comedy Lounge on the first Wednesday of the month.

8. Local Laughs Kwinana (NEW)

One of Perth’s newest rooms, you can catch local laughs on the first Friday of each month at The Kwinana Local.

At the moment the night is 100 per cent open mic – which means seasoned comics testing new stuff and new comics cutting they’re teeth – but we’re told it’s going to ‘evolve’ in coming months. So make sure to watch this space!

9. Grumpy’s Cheeky Sundays (NEWER)

What used to be Defectors Bar, above the Flying Scotsman is now Grumpy’s Music Bar.

But every second Sunday they get a bit Cheeky and host some comedy instead.

As well as some amazing local and touring comics doing their sets, there’s also something special in store at this venue. A Sunday would never be complete without a Sunday roast, and that’s exactly what’s in store at Grumpy’s. Two comics, roasting each other. What’s not to love.

10. Giggling Goose Comedy Club (NEWEST)

Perth’s first dedicated all-female room, Giggling Goose will run monthly on a Tuesday out of The Bird, a great venue already home to amazing performance ventures like Barefaced Stories.

The very first show is on August 20, so go see some of the city’s most talented ladies do their thing.
