Qantas Perth hub – direct flights from Australia to Europe

Perth could become a major airline hub as Qantas announces the potential to fly non-stop from Australia to Europe out of WA with their new fleet of 787-9 Dreamliners.

Qantas yesterday indicated its intention to use some of its $975 million pre-tax profit for the 2015 financial year to purchase an initial eight 787-9 Dreamliners, the first of which are due to be delivered in 2017.

Given the 787s’ smaller size compared to the 747 jumbos they are set to replace, they would give the airline “the flexibility of having more aircraft without significantly changing our overall capacity,” according to Qantas CEO Alan Joyce.

“Their new technology will reduce fuel, cut heavy maintenance requirements, and open up new destinations around the globe”.

And it turns out Perth could end up being the beneficiary of this. Having at one point discontinued all of its own regular international services out of the west-coast port as part of its cost-cutting measures, Qantas is now considering a plan to make Perth its hub for 16-hour non-stop flights to the UK and Europe using the new long-range 787 Dreamliners.

Joyce said WA could “become the hub for non-stop operations to Europe”, with passengers feeding in from the east coast.

It’s certainly an interesting prospect for Perth, as a gateway to the eastern hemisphere, and for Australian travellers wanting to avoid the hassle of stopovers. Watch this space..
