Shakespeare Theatre Pop-Up Perth: 10 Things You Need To Know

Pop-up Globe’s full-scale working replica of Shakespeare’s theatre is set to open in Perth with a bang!

Pop-up Globe, the world’s first full-scale temporary working replica of Shakespeare’s theatre, the second Globe, is about to pop-up in Perth.

In what has been dubbed as the best night of theatre ever and after performing to 550,000 people in just two and half years, Pop-up Globe will pop up at Crown Perth from 9 October 2019 for 6 weeks only for an epic festival of Shakespeare.

Experience a festival four of Shakespeare’s most spectacular masterworks – Hamlet, A Midsummer Nights’ Dream, Measure for Measure, and Twelfth Night – complete with stunning costumes, elaborate sets, special effects, and litres of blood.

But this isn’t dusty old Shakespeare – it is bawdy, hilarious, brutal and blood-soaked. This is Shakespeare alive, like a party and here are 10 things you need to know.

1. $10 ticket opening offer means EVERYONE can enjoy Pop-up Globe!

One of the greatest theatres in history is about to pop up in Perth and as an opening offer the team behind Pop-up Globe are offering $10 tickets to all preview and opening week performances from 5 October until 13 October.

Available from 9am, Friday 20th September, the $10 tickets are strictly limited and are for selected lower gallery seats and groundlings tickets (aka the mosh pit!).

2. On the downlow, the cheap seats might just be the best ones.

Tickets start from $29 and go up to $250 for the full VIP treatment. However, the inexpensive ones might just offer the best experience. The ‘groundlings’ tickets get you access to the standing room in front of the stage. It’s kind of like a Shakespearian mosh pit. Think moving monologues delivered to theatre goers standing only metres away, fights spilling out from the stage, and characters popping up at the back and making their way through the crowd to the stage.

3. Got a blood phobia? Don’t stand too close to the stage.

Pop-up Globe is actually the biggest importer of stage blood in the southern hemisphere and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, in particular, makes awesome use of it! Pro tip: if you stand in the middle of groundlings towards the end of Act 2 you will definitely get sprayed. But don’t worry – it’s all machine washable. Promise.

4. Fancy yourself a bit of a performer? Stand up close and you never know…

Audience participation is something most people either love or hate, so it pays to be prepared either way. While no one will be asked to jump on the stage and interact with the actors, characters frequently directly address audience members, occasionally veering off-script with hilarity often ensuing.

5. Pray for sunshine, but don’t worry if it rains (we got you covered!)

The groundlings area has an open-air roof so while everyone hopes for clear skies, the show goes on regardless. But don’t worry – Pop-up Globe has it covered with ponchos to hand out if it does start to sprinkle. Theatre goers are encouraged to dress appropriately regardless; air conditioners didn’t exist back in 1614 and they don’t exist in this theatre either!

6. Book a private booth fit for a king, (just remember that everyone can see you!)

Those after the royal experience (literally: this is where the royal family would have sat in the original theatre), can book tickets in one of the private booths. These are rooms above the stage itself, looking down onto the cast and audience. The view from here is incomparable, but don’t forget that in a stage flooded with bright light, you’ll also be on full display.

7. Head to the bar before, during and after!

In the old days London’s water was undrinkable, which meant they drank mead on the daily and some of the performances got pretty rowdy. Thankfully times have changed and now you can grab a cocktail at Nobu or TWR first. How refined. There’s also a pop-up bar on site to keep you, ahem, hydrated.

8. If you think Shakespeare is boring, this is the show for you.

If you thought Shakespeare was boring at school, don’t worry we tend to agree. That’s why Pop-up Globe decided to perform it exactly as it was in Shakespeare’s time. Pop-up Globe is bawdy, hilarious, brutal and blood-soaked! This is Shakespeare alive and electric; like a party or a rock concert.

9. Want to laugh? Want to cry? Pick the play to suit your mood.

Experience a festival four of Shakespeare’s most spectacular masterworks – Hamlet, A Midsummer Nights’ Dream, Measure for Measure, and Twelfth Night – complete with stunning costumes, elaborate sets, special effects, and litres of blood.

10. Did we mention $10 tickets in opening week?

If you’re curious to see why 650,000 people have come to Pop-up Globe in the last three years, grab a $10 ticket to one of the four productions on offer and be among the first in Perth to find out!

Pop-up Globe is an extraordinary experience that everyone should get the chance to enjoy. The season is strictly limited.

See it before it pops down.
