Reduced season announced for AFL 2020 season.

All eyes have been on the AFL and what their next move would be with given state competitions around Australia have been delayed until the end of May, though for the moment the AFL season will go ahead but with a reduced amount of games to be played.

Off the back of the new AFL games would be played without fans, CEO Gillon McLachlan said five matches would be scrapped, at a minimum, due to the outbreak of coronavirus.

What lies ahead

  • The match-ups in the first four rounds would remain as fixtures
  • The rest of the fixture would be adjusted to accommodate the shortened season
  • All teams would play each other once
  • The AFLPA had been receptive to talk of a mass player pay cut
  • If a player tested positive to coronavirus, the League would have no choice but to suspend play across the competition

But what about Round 1?

A decision on whether round 1 of the AFL will kick off on Thursday has been delayed until tomorrow.
