I am always in need of good coffee so I’ve been eagerly watching and waiting for Standby Espresso in Mount Lawley to open.

All that excitement paid off when Standby finally opened a couple of weeks ago as we love it and have been getting our lattes from there every time we’re in Mount Lawley (which is a lot as our business is just a few doors down!).

Owned by the guys behind Engine Room Espresso in North Perth, Standby Espresso is literally a hole in the wall on the corner of Walcott and Raglan Street. The striking mural by local artist Daek William is hard to miss – I love how much it brightens this part of Mount Lawley. Before Standby Espresso came along, it was just used as a smoko spot by those working nearby – not hugely attractive!

Standby Espresso uses Toby Estate Coffee and charge $3.50 for a small and $4.50 for a large, what I would expect to pay for coffee in Mount Lawley. There’s a few crates out the front and some stools at the counter if you want to have a quick seat to down your coffee but it’s not made for socialising. It really is a grab and go kinda coffee spot.

I’m in Mount Lawley every Friday without junior burger so my new coffee ritual before work is to park the car and grab takeaway coffee from Standby Espresso to enjoy whilst setting up our Crust. My afternoon coffee hit will probably stay the same, if I have any meetings I’ll head to Cantina 663 as there’s more room and they have amazing desserts – their rolo dessert was featured in my Top 5 Perth Eats. BossMan will continue to be where I go for catch ups with friends or a leisurely coffee just because. I LOVE BossMan’s coffee, baristas and vibe.
