Each year, Western Australia sends a staggering 2.5 million tonnes of waste to landfill. That equates to enough garbage trucks to form a line from Perth to Turquoise Bay. Or, more than 6,000 Bell Towers, if you stacked them. It’s high time to roll up our sleeves and take action. And we have the solution.
RecycleSmart is a pioneering startup, all about making recycling easy for households and businesses. They do the legwork — so you don’t have to — and pick up hard-to-recycle things from your doorstep. Think of them as “Australia’s Uber for waste” collecting almost everything that can’t be placed in the council recycling bins and connecting the resources with their certified recycling partners. The Power Pickup service operates in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Adelaide, Hobart, and now, Perth.
By getting involved with RecycleSmart, you’re doing your part and making a significant difference to the health of the environment. Since launching, 60,000 Recycle Heroes have joined the movement, diverting 21,047,005 litres of resources from landfill. That’s no small feat.
How does the Power Pickup service work?

All you have to do is schedule a pickup by logging in or using the app to set up your collection day. Then, put your hard-to-recycle things in a regular shopping bag, and leave the bag/s outside your house for RecycleSmart to collect on your pickup day.
What can RecycleSmart collect?
Soft plastics
RecycleSmart collects clean and dry soft plastics that can be easily scrunched in your hand. Think bread bags, bubble wrap, and biscuit packaging, as well as frozen fruit and fresh produce bags, chip packets, and zip lock bags.
Clothes and textiles
They also collect clothes, textiles, shoes, accessories, and linen in any condition. This includes backpacks, jewellery, blankets, cushions, and soft toys, as well as a whole lot more.
E-waste
E-waste includes any electrical appliances that use a battery or plug. RecycleSmart collects small electronic items that fit in a shopping bag like a mobile phone, laptop, kettle, game console, iron, or hairdryer.
Misfits
Misfit items are other household items that don’t fit into the other categories. Think batteries, polystyrene, lightbulbs, printer cartridges, aluminium coffee capsules, and coffee cups.
Who can use RecycleSmart?

Individuals
The Power Pickup makes recycling the tricky stuff as easy as ordering a pizza. RecycleSmart helps to conveniently recycle your soft plastics, e-waste, textiles, batteries, and more than 100 other items online or through the app. It saves time and stress with no need to further research or run around town to find the perfect drop-off solution. The best part? You can do it all from the comfort of your couch. What’s not to love about that?
Businesses
The recycling challenge extends far beyond our homes, it’s also a huge problem for business and councils alike. Luckily, RecycleSmart has already thought about that. They can help you future-proof your office, café, or business with their brand new Office Recycling Packages that provide the ultimate solution for year-round recycling. These bundles feature a durable 60 litre bin and a year’s worth of recycling for those awkward items. They are available for all business sizes and will ensure recycling in your work space remains simple and clear. RecycleSmart already works with big brands like Canva, WeWork, and John Holland, as well as more than 1,000 others. So, why not add your company to the list?
Partnerships
RecycleSmart collaborates with various recycling partners that help process the collected materials. Soft plastics are sent to the WA-based Circular Seed where advanced technology transforms them back into reusable outputs through pyrolysis — a process of thermal decomposition of materials at elevated temperatures.
Wearable clothes are donated to local charities and op shops, supporting communities in need. Blister packs are meticulously separated into aluminium and plastic, which are then repurposed into steel products and construction materials. Plus, polystyrene is granulated and pelletised for reuse in various applications, from park benches to bee hives.
