Internationally magazine ‘Monocle‘ explores the new Perth

The new Perth is here.

Must see video below.

This month, ‘Monocle Magazine’ – one of the world’s most influential print and online publications – explores how Perth has transformed from a outpost ‘mining town’, to a vibrant, cosmopolitan hub focused on culture, architecture, entrepreneurialism and urban renewal.

It’s a beautiful snapshot in time, showcasing and documenting the transformation of Perth this decade.

“As Perth attempts to shed its reputation for being nothing more than a mining city, we explore the architecture, art and hospitality initiatives that are shaping this outpost,” ‘Monocle’ Journalist Pauline den Hartog Jager says.

“Perth has been in constant motion over the last decade, triggered by the recent mining boom… enabling the development of ambitious urban renewal projects.”

Now, the new Perth is creating an environment for “more entrepreneurs, retailers and young creatives” to build a new era for our city.

So what’s changed about Perth?

The story looks at Perth’s urban renewal projects like Elizabeth QuayĀ andĀ Perth underground; architectural transformations like Cathedral Square, The Alex Hotel,Ā Perth ArenaĀ andĀ Perth Stadium;Ā our revitalised cafe, restaurant and bar culture; events likeĀ Fringe Festival, Perth International Arts FestivalĀ and movements likeĀ FORM‘s inspired transformation of our city.

Perth is now building a unique culture and identity, while still maintainingĀ our distinct laid back personality, the report notes.

A collection of some of Perth’s most influential change makers are interviewed for the March 2016 edition.Ā

Award winning Architect, Nic Brunsdon: “It’s wonderful in terms of the opportunity presented here…Perth has this great opportunity of being less and less influenced by inter-state neighboursĀ and really developing our own culture and brand.”

CEO of Committee for Perth, Marion Fulker: “Perth has grown up… with the land uses separated.. the CBD where we work and the suburbs where we live. Now there are lots of reasons to stay.”

“We didn’t have something that said ‘this is Perth’… now we get those iconic shots,” Fulker said.

General Manager of Form, Rebecca EgglestonĀ :Ā “There’s been a lot of change over the last decade in the mindset of the people of Perth in terms of how they see their city and their role within it.”

“We’ve gone from people as seeing it as ‘Dullsville’… to recognising we have the capacity to change that.”

The piece is part of Monocle magazine’s look at Australia this month.
