We all know Esperance has some of Western Australia’s most beautiful beaches and Twilight Bay is one of the best.
The laid-back coastal town at the southern tip of the Goldfields may be tiny but what they lack in size they make up for in beauty. Boasting some of the world’s clearest blue waters, whitest sand, and a large abundance of wildlife, this place is worth the road trip.
Twilight Bay is sometimes overlooked by its close neighbours Lucky Bay and Hellfire Bay which have constantly placed on Australia’s best beaches list.
However, Twilight Bay is closer to town and has just as breathtaking blue waters. Gentle granite rocks protect the right-hand cove of the beach from strong southerly winds making it the perfect place to bring kids.
Where is Twilight Bay?
Esperance is located five and a half hours south of Perth.
Unlike some of the beaches in the Esperance area that can take over 30 minutes to get to, Twilight Bay is a very pleasant and easy ten-minute drive along the Great Ocean Drive from the Esperance city centre.
Best times to visit Twilight Bay?
Summer is undoubtedly the best time of the year to visit the south coast area of WA with warmer days making the chilly water more bearable. In the summer months, you’ll also find an ice cream truck that frequents the area allowing the kids to finish off a sandy day at the beach the right way.
At high tide, you can swim out to the granite island and jump off into the beautiful aqua waters. Alternatively, at low tide, if you’re lucky, you can sometimes walk out on the sandbar over to the island.
Is it safe?
Esperance has gained itself a pretty big reputation with multiple fatal shark attacks over the years.
Twilight Bay is home to the Goldfields Surf Life Saving Club who train and patrol the beach here on the weekend, so rest assured you’re under watchful eyes. If you’re still uneasy about taking a dip then remember the fact that Twilight Bay has been described as the safest beach in the area by the Western Australian Surf Life Saving Association.
Things to do at Twilight Bay
Our perfect day itinerary would be grabbing a sun tent, plenty of good local food and drinks and parking up for a day filled with beach cricket, swimming races, snorkelling, lazing around on a floaty and listening to good music with family and friends.
Another option would be to come down to the beach at sunset with a picnic rug, platter and wine. The perfect way to end a good summer’s day? We think so.
Are dogs allowed?
Unfortunately, dogs are prohibited at Twilight Bay so you’ll have to leave your furry friends at home.
Camping at Twilight Bay
Twilight Bay’s closest campsite lies 6km away at the RAC Esperance Holiday Park. Options range from campsites, caravan sites and resort rooms depending on your budget. The Holiday Park is a short 15-minute walk into town and a 5-minute drive to Twilight Bay.
Whether you’re an Esperance local or on the hunt for your next road trip destination we would give Twilight Bay five stars as the perfect place for everyone from families, surfers, photographers, and backpackers to enjoy.
