Despite its reputation for being a ‘sleepy city’, Perth has a lot to offer in the way of places to see and things to do.
If it’s your first visit to Perth, it can be fairly overwhelming to try and pack everything in but here are our 15 must do’s for first time visitors to Perth.
Kings Park
As one of the biggest parks within a city in the world (even bigger than New York’s Central Park), Kings Park should be top of your to do list when you visit Perth. From the War Memorial and Fraser Park Lookout to the Lotterywest Federation Walkway, the Botanic Garden and Nature Trail, there is something to keep everyone happy at Kings Park.
Swan River
Take a trip along the Swan River and admire the views of the city from the water. You can take a short ferry from the city across the river to South Perth, enjoy a leisurely lunch cruise to Fremantle or the Swan Valley or imagine you’re in Venice and opt for a gondola ride on the river from Elizabeth Quay.
Perth Mint
Watch gold being poured in the Perth Mint’s original melting house built in 1899, see the largest and most valuable coin in the world and take in a guided heritage walk around the Perth Mint.
Swan Valley – Wine Tours
The Swan Valley has a plethora of wineries and local produce to taste and buy. Sample wines, cheese, olives, chocolate, nougat, honey and more – all locally made. You can do a self-drive tour or book a guided Swan Valley tour for a completely relaxing experience.
Elizabeth Quay
The newly built Elizabeth Quay is fast becoming a headline destination to check out when you’re in Perth. The interesting architecture and great selection of restaurants and bars means you can easily while away a few hours here.

The Bell Tower
Home to the Swan Bells, this is an interesting stop to make on your Perth travels. The bells include the 12 original bells from London’s St Martin in the Fields, which can be dated back to the 14th century. Try your hand at ringing them or buy your very own love lock to add to the tower.
Supreme Court Gardens
If you fancy some peace and quiet in the city, head to the gorgeous Supreme Court Gardens and enjoy a leisurely picnic while lazing in the shade.
London Court
Right in the heart of the city, you’ll find London Court, which really has to be seen to be believed. Walking into the shopping arcade, you’re transported back to Elizabethan England and it’s something completely different from the modern buildings that surround it. If you visit during winter you may be lucky enough to see it snowing here!
Rottnest Island
Fancy a day out of the city? Hop on a ferry from Fremantle or Hillarys and spend the day at Rottnest Island. There are no cars on the island so you can hire or take bikes to get around. Visit the many beaches, spot gorgeous marine life while snorkelling and don’t miss the cute quokkas.
Fremantle Tram Tour
Want to see Fremantle in an unusual way? Fremantle Tram Tours offer an interesting take on your usual city tours and the drivers give a fascinating commentary as they complete their route. Hop on and off to visit the many attractions Freo has to offer.
Fremantle Prison
When you’re in Fremantle, a must do is the Fremantle Prison. It’s WA’s only UNESCO world-heritage listed building. Built by convict labour in the 1850s, it was a working prison up until 1991. It has a fascinating history and they have several different tour options to choose from, including a tunnels tour on foot and by boat!
Swim with the Dolphins
Live out your dream of swimming with wild dolphins with this amazing nature experience. Your adventure begins cruising Rockingham’s sheltered bays and islands in search of the 180 local dolphins before slowing down to let the dolphins know we are keen to play. Hillarys Boat Harbour
Popular with locals and tourists alike, a visit to Hillarys Boat Harbour is a must do when you’re in Perth. There is a stunning, calm beach which is ideal for kids who love the beach but hate waves, as the harbour is completely protected. There are heaps of restaurants and cafes to suit all budgets too and several boutique stores to have a browse or pick up some souvenirs or gifts.
Cottesloe Beach
An icon of Perth, Cottesloe Beach is the go to beach for first time visitors to Perth. If you’re visiting in March, make sure you don’t miss Sculpture By The Sea but go early as it can get super busy and parking is limited.
Penguin Island
45 minutes south of Perth, you can take a ferry across to Penguin Island in just 5 minutes. You might be lucky enough to spot wild sea lions, penguins and dolphins, but on the island you can visit the Discovery Centre and get up close with the penguins. The island has lots of spots which are perfect for snorkelling, swimming and enjoying a picnic so it makes an ideal day out.
