A Winter Love Story: Slow Mornings, Soulful Escapes, & Fireside Wines on Rottnest Island

As the temperature dips, Wadjemup / Rottnest Island turns the volume down — and the romance up.

There’s a softer side to Rottnest in winter. With the summer crowds long gone, beaches that are usually busy with sunscreen-slathered tourists are near-empty, morning mist lingers a little longer over the bays, and everything moves at a slightly slower pace.

With fewer footprints and more space to breathe, the island invites you and yours to do the same. It may only be a 25-minute trip across the water, but Rottnest feels a world away, and slipping off-grid to reconnect has never been easier.

This winter, slow down together with barefoot beach walks, long lunches, and fireside wines — Rotto is ready when you are. Here’s what’s in store.

Romance on Rottnest begins right from the get-go. From the moment you rise, the island’s calm pace sets the tone for the day. There’s so much to do, but nowhere to be, and with the summer crowds long gone, there’s no fight for a prime position on one of the many beaches, either. When you’re ready, head to Lontara for the Samphire Benedict or brioche French toast, or keep it casual over some shared fresh-from-the-oven pastries from the bakery

As the first light creeps across the Bay, lay down your mats with Evolve In You, Rottnest’s only yoga and pilates experience. The gentle morning flows are set to the soundtrack of waves lapping the shore as you breathe, stretch, and find stillness side-by-side in the cool salty air. Private sessions are available year-round, inviting couples to connect and slow down without distraction.

‘Long walks on the beach’ isn’t exactly groundbreaking romanticism, but when the beaches have squeaky white sand, limestone rock formations, turquoise waters, and the odd gull lingering nearby, it’s anything but cliché. Wander from the Basin to Pinky’s, collecting shells and core memories along the way, or head a little bit further north from the settlement to the secluded stretch of beach at Parakeet Bay to find even fewer footprints on the sand.

It’s easy to live la dolce vita with your sweetheart at Rottnest’s seaside Italian eatery Isola Bar e Cibo. Right on the water down past the pub, it’s here you’ll find the island’s most romantic table for two. The seafood-heavy menu shines a spotlight on WA produce — think handmade taglierini with generous chunks of blue swimmer crab, wood-grilled whole Skull Island prawns swimming in a tangy sauce, and colossal Bistecca alla Fiorentina made for sharing between two — with an Italian-leaning wine list, a dedicated negroni menu, plus creative takes on other classic cocktails.

And while the plates and plonk alone are enough to visit, the relaxed-yet-attentive service, warm Italian waitstaff, and stunning panoramic ocean views raise the bar yet again.

Come golden hour, make your way to Rottnest’s newest retreat The Lodge Wadjemup, where the inland salt lakes reflect the sky’s changing hues. The on-site open bar and dining space, appropriately dubbed Sunsets, boasts a large outdoor area that gives guests a front-row seat to the magic. Share a bottle of red and order from the all-day Mediterranean-inspired menu packed with fresh seafood and protein plates by head chef Mat Powell.

Fireside nightcaps beneath the stars

Just steps from the suites at Samphire Rottnest, the beachside fire pits at Bayside Bar invite slow, starry evenings. Ringed by rattan armchairs and sheltered from the seabreeze, there’s something undeniably romantic about canoodling under the stars at Samphire. With a nightcap in hand, your toes in the sand, and the fire crackling beside you, wrap yourself in wonder because special moments deserve a special place and winter has never felt so warm.
