Little trails for the little legs.

Kids in need of some fresh air and exercise? Well, we’ve got a list of the best Perth family friendly walking trails for kids to get them out and about.

It is no secret that nature has so many benefits for the little ones in our lives, and swapping the TV remote for a stick and gumnut can be so good for developing creativity and resilience in children. So the question all parents, carers, and grandparents might be asking is, how do we convince them to adventure outside?

We see kids out on the trails every day and find that once they are out there, adventure, exploration, and make-believe take over, and the hardest part is done! To make your life a tad easier, we are sharing our favourite little trails for the little legs.

If you are unsure about heading out on the trails alone, we recommend joining a company like The Hike Collective, who run Kids Hiking Adventures in the school holidays, and child friendly hikes every weekend!

Glenbrook Trail, John Forrest National Park

Nestled in the heart of John Forrest National Park, the Glenbrook trail takes you around the Glenbrook dam.

This 2.2km loop will inspire creativity and play through the winding trails, rustic stairs, granite boulders, and magnificent array of seasonal flora. The recently built Chevron Nature Play at the start and finish point of this trail is also a great addition to your adventures in the Park, with giant wooden lizards, bridges, and logs to climb and discover.

Finish up with a picnic in a fairy village hut, or have a bbq on one of the nearby facilities.

Swan View Tunnel on the Heritage Trail, John Forrest National Park

Not all of the Perth walking trails for kids are created equal as this one has a tunnel.

The Swan view tunnel is an iconic 260m long experience of ghostly proportions. Not for the faint of heart, this exhilarating hotspot can be accessed from both the main carpark in John Forrest National Park making for a 5km return hike, or from the Peachey Road carpark for a short and sweet 1.5km return hike.

Walk where the railway once carried picnickers and workers to and fro through the park. If the kids are up for a longer hike, combine the Swan View Tunnel with the Glenbrook Dam trail and enjoy an 8km journey through the Park.

Lesmurdie Falls, Kalamunda.

If your children like exploring waterfalls and streams, then go no further than Lesmurdie Falls.

You can explore the magic of the waterfall from the top or bottom of the falls, and in summer when the water isn’t flowing, the kids can get their climb on, and rock hop the falls. There are numerous trails to hike, with distances varying from 900m and up to 5km without straying far from the falls or the carpark.

Pack a picnic and enjoy the most glorious city skyline sunsets to make a family fun day out of it.

Whistlepipe Gully, Forrestfield.

There is so much magic in this cozy and convenient hiking haven.

Tucked a short 30-minute drive east of Perth, Whistlepipe Gully is a short 3.5km trail that highlights old house ruins, wonderful wooden bridges crossing the gully, and a woodlands with a fairy village feel to it!

This is also dog friendly, so it is the perfect micro-adventure for the entire family!

Nature Trail, Kings Park.

We all know and love the iconic Kings Park, but did you know that there are some beautiful trails, made specifically with the little ones in mind?

The bushland nature trail offers a unique landscape to explore WA’s wildflowers, birdlife, and trees. Get the kids to look out for an open mia mia structure which marks the entry of the trail. After this short adventure, let the kids burn some more energy while exploring the Rio Tinto Naturescape for a real authentic natural play experience.

As always, Kings Park is the perfect spot for a picnic and family day out, so pack the picnic rug and sangas.

Bells Rapids, Brigadoon.

One of the best Perth walking trails for kids in Perth can be found at Bells Rapids.

In the spring months, this special spot really puts on a show. With water gushing down the river, and bridges and boulders to climb and explore, the hiking trails of Bells Rapids are sure to impress.

The river walk offers a beginner-friendly 3km return hike along the river’s edge, with some opportunity for the kids to climb over the rocky outcrops. For the older kids or the more adventurous souls, add the goat walk on to the river walk for a combination trail, which will extend your hike to 5km and give you some steep inclines and declines to navigate as well as some beautiful coastal plain views from the top.

If you want an even more adventurous day out, be sure to head to the river to watch the annual avon descent in spring to witness the rapids in action.

Butterflies, birds and bridges trail, Wilson.

Are you ready for a 4km journey through woodlands and meadows, over creeks and along the rivers edge in Canning River Regional Park?

This beautiful and explorative trail will encourage and reward nature play, and will enlighten the sense and imagination as the little minds run wild with adventure. A very central trail to suit a short trip for kids of all ages.
