The Perth school holiday break is here.

There’s so much to see and do around the city, especially just out of town; so we’re encouraging you to take the kids out to explore the fun on offer in the Perth Hills and Armadale region.

Here’s some great ideas to inspire you to get out and explore the family fun on offer these school holidays.

Meet the locals

Cohunu Koala Park (Instagram – andrewjbalchin)

Get up close and personal with our Aussie icons, the Perth Hills Armadale region is home to two wildlife parks offering a fun and interactive family day out.

Cuddle koalas at Cohunu Koala Park, hand feed the roaming kangaroos and wallabies and have a chat with over 30 talking parrots!

To meet the less furry locals, head to the Armadale Reptile and Wildlife Centre on South Western Highway; home to over 70 different species you’ll learn about snakes, lizards, turtles, fruit bats and many more.

If you are up for a challenge, head to Bungendore Park.

Many native species like wallabies, quendas and the forest red-tailed black cockatoo can be spotted here, but you’ll have to be patient! Call in for maps from the Perth Hills Armadale Visitor Centre.

Playtime, anytime

Frye Park Kelmscott

Get off the iPads and get into a playground. You’ll find an array of fun outdoor parks and playgrounds sure to excite the imagination.

Armadale’s newest playground has a race track inspired design, including stop and give way signs as well as jungle drums and a double swing

Rushton Park, corner of River Road and Orlando Street in Kelmscott.

An ideal nature playground, this shady green park with the Canning River running through it is perfect for exploring

The kids will love climbing inside the robot’s head and running in the hamster wheel.

Picnic in the great outdoors

Picnic in the Perth Hills

Family time doesn’t have to be fancy, pack a picnic and enjoy a day out at Churchman Brook Dam.

Barbeque in the open air while the kids play on the modern playground.

After lunch, kick a ball around the large grassed area, take a walk through the surrounding bush land and check out the views from the top of the dam wall.

A day of excitement at the Kelmscott Show 20-21 October

Cottonwool Creations

A day at the Kelmscott Show provides excitement, entertainment and variety for the whole family. Ride up a storm in Sideshow Alley, cuddle baby goats at Old MacDonalds Farmyard Nursery and enjoy a pony ride or for the more adventurous, a camel ride!

Visit on Saturday to check out the free KIDS ZONE, catch a fish, test your coordination on Ring on a Bottle and break out on the dancefloor in Just Dance.

Local skate park fun.

Skateboard WA

Grab your rollerblades, scooters or skateboards and head to one of the local skate parks to test your skills.

Armadale Skate Park, Orchard Avenue.
Kelmscott Skate Park, Clifton Street.
Roleystone Skate Park, Jarrah Road.
Forrestdale Skate Park, corner Weld Street and Armadale Road.

Don’t have your own skateboard? Head along to a free skate clinic at Roleystone Skate park on the 29th of September hosted by the City of Armadale and Skateboarding WA.

Ramble through orchards

Raeburn Orchards in Spring

Pack a picnic and head to the hills for a day in the orchards. View the changing of the seasons and show your kids where the fruit in the supermarket comes from.

Raeburn Orchards is open to the public 9am-5pm daily except for Tuesdays, the spring blossoms provide the perfect back drop for unique family photos and you can even purchase fresh fruit straight from the source.

Head to the Perth Hills Festival in Karragullen on the 7th of October for a day out in the hills celebrating fresh and local produce, kids under 12 enter for free!
