You may be reaching towards the South Australian border, but that does not mean the beauty of the state has reached its almighty end – enter Cape Arid National Park.

This four-wheel-drive playground is an hours’ drive east of Esperance and has plenty to see across this vast area covering a whooping 2,794 sq km so strap yourself in for a scenic adventure! Cape Arid’s remoteness is what makes this park so attractive with its bio-diverse parks, beautifully blue-hued beaches, and rugged terrains to appeal to hard-core nature enthusiasts.

This wilderness wonderland is home to over 1100 types of species and plants and attracts 160 species – so bring the binoculars for many rounds of bird bingo! It is not all about glancing towards the sky as migrating whales can be seen swimming along the coastline from late winter to early spring.

Bushwalking is a popular way to appreciate the park’s gorgeousness – either along the coast along the Tagon Coastal Trail (make sure you look out for whales at Dolphin Cove!) or Len Otte Nature Trail. If game, you can reach new heights by heading along the Mt Ragged Walk Trail, and climbing the park’s highest point, Tower Peak. Just short of 600m, the peak forms part of the jagged Russell Ranges and is comprised of ancient elevated quartzite.

Stay

There is only one camping spot within the park. Visitors must take note to bring water as there is no drinking water within the park. Barbeque and toilets facilities available.

Mt Ragged Campground – Access to this campground is restricted to four-wheel drive only and has no camping fees.
