Latest Victoria coronavirus update sees hundreds more cases recorded as State weathers lockdown.

Victoria remains in a tight lockdown expected to cost the country more than $6 to $7 billion in the September quarter.

But despite a curfew – lasting between 8pm and 5am – mandatory mask wearing and travel restrictions beyond 5km of a residence, the State is still recording soaring case numbers.

Today 471 more cases were confirmed.

Of the eight new deaths, two were men in their 60s, three are were men in their 80s, two were women in their 80s and one woman was a woman in her 90s.

The new cases leave the total active number in Victoria at 7,449, 1,533 of which are linked to aged care centres.

Of the new cases, more than 100 are from unknown sources.

Work restrictions come into force, permits required

A suite of new measures to restrict even the most essential sectors, such as construction and food processing, came into place on Thursday.

Workers permitted to be onsite need to now carry a permit with them at all times.

Red meat processing will be down to two thirds of its capacity, while poultry would be down 80 per cent.

The restrictions have stoked fears of shortages, but Premier Daniel Andrews said this was unlikely.

“I wouldn’t want anyone to think there’s going to be empty shelves,” he said.

“Everyone will do their utmost, their absolute best, to make sure what you need is on the shelf.”
