NorthLink – The $1 billion road project is the largest in WA’s history, with the State Government pointing to the importance of keeping infrastructure projects on track during COVID-19

The enormous 37km highway was given the final tick by the State and Federal Government – who jointly funded the project – this morning and is expected to transform WA roads.

Road users travelling from Kewdale to Muchea will now be able to avoid 16 sets of traffic lights, two railway crossings and 21 speed limit changes.

The third and final section of the project – a 22-kilometre dual carriageway highway between Ellenbrook and Muchea – is also expected transform how traffic enters and exits Perth from the state’s north.

The highway’s completion is expected to divert about 80 percent of heavy vehicles away from local roads and improve connection through the Swan Valley, and shave off significant amounts of travel time with speed limits set at 100 kilometres an hour to Ellenbrook and 110 kilometres an hour between Ellenbrook and Muchea.

Scott Morrison hailed the completion of NorthLink and said it would transform travel in WA.

“The opening of the final section means road users, particularly freight, can now realise the full benefits of the 37-kilometre highway,” the Prime Minister said.

“NorthLink WA has also supported around 7000 direct and indirect jobs for Western Australians throughout its construction.”

The new road will mean about 3200 trucks a day will be removed from Great Northern Highway south of Stock Road, which is expected to be a provide relief to residents, growers, tourism businesses and visitors in the Swan region.

Premier Mark McGowan said the project was part of a “huge pipeline” of infrastructure planned for Perth, including several major road upgrades and the Metronet Morley-Ellenbrook line.

“These are vital job-creating projects that will ensure WA is well-placed to respond in the economic recovery stage of the pandemic,” Mr McGowan said.

Cyclists and pedestrians can also access a four-metre-wide Principal Shared Path that spans 42km from Railway Parade in Bayswater to Muchea.
