Western Australia has recorded five months with no community transmission of COVID-19.

Western Australia has hit an encouraging COVID-19 milestone with now 5 months since the last community transmission was recorded within the state.

While in WA we haven’t experienced the outbreak of community spread like in Victoria, the last time community spread was detected in the state was April 11.

WA has recorded COVID-19 cases since then, however they have all either been known close contacts or returned travellers from overseas.

While the hard borders not just in Western Australia , but border restrictions at larger throughout Australia have been a talking point, there is no doubt the strict policies have help stop the spread of COVID-19 throughout the state.

“Avoiding community spread of COVID-19 is the most important measure of our success in fighting the virus, so this milestone is very significant,” Premier Mark McGowan said on Friday.

“This accomplishment shows that our vigilance has paid off – but it should also be a reminder that we need to keep up our efforts.

While Mr McGowan will not place a firm date on when WA will lift restrictions on it’s borders, hope for a COVID-19 vaccine in early 2021 has been encouraging until studies were paused due to an unexplained illness.

UK drug company AstraZeneca has had to put the promising COVID-19 trial run through Oxford University on hold after one participant became ill.

“This is a routine action which has to happen whenever there is a potentially unexplained illness in one of the trials, while it is investigated, ensuring we maintain the integrity of the trials,” the statement said.

Perth for the week has seen 3 positive COVID-19 cases recorded, all cases were individuals returning from overseas and are all in hotel quarantine.
