The life-sized figures, dating from approximately the late 200s BCE, were crafted for China’s First Emperor, Qin Shi Huang, to guard his tomb and protect him in the afterlife. Each warrior is distinct, modelled with its own features, uniform, and expression, forming part of an army that originally numbered in the thousands.

They were discovered in 1974, when farmers digging a well near Xi’an uncovered fragments that would lead to the excavation of a sprawling underground world. The find reshaped global understanding of ancient China and remains one of the most important archaeological revelations of the twentieth century.

Life-sized, stoic, and intricate — the Terracotta Warriors have called Boola Bardip home since late June.

Touted as the most significant museum exhibition ever staged in Western Australia, the display includes more than 225 ancient artefacts. Among them are eight of the world-famous Terracotta Warriors from the mausoleum of China’s First Emperor, Qin Shihuang, each carrying thousands of years of history.

Running until February 22nd, 2026, Terracotta Warriors: Legacy of the First Emperor offers fresh insights into the life, legacy, and afterlife of the First Emperor. With immersive, cutting-edge technology and artefacts never seen outside China, this exhibition brings the legacy of an ancient civilisation to life right here in Perth.
