Perth residents are being invited to get their hands dirty this weekend as the City of Perth hosts a community tree planting event in celebration of National Tree Day — Australia’s largest annual initiative dedicated to tree planting and nature care.
Community planting on Heirisson Island
On Sunday, July 27th, from 9:30 am to 11:00 am, volunteers will help to plant 200 native trees on the southern end of Heirisson Island (Matagarup). Each species has been carefully chosen to reflect the natural ecosystem along the Swan River, supporting biodiversity and enhancing one of Perth’s most cherished riverfront locations.
City of Perth Deputy Lord Mayor Bruce Reynolds encouraged the community to get involved and join the rest of the nation to plant a tree this National Tree Day.
“Our community planting event is another great opportunity for people of all ages to come together and take part in a hands-on effort to grow our urban forest and support local biodiversity,” Cr Reynolds said.
“Urban greening plays a vital role in cooling our city, providing habitat for wildlife and enhancing the overall liveability of Perth. That’s why we’re committed to expanding our tree canopy to 30 per cent by 2036 and over the 24/25 financial year, the City planted more than 600 trees and 6,300 plants.”
“We also held our third annual Tree Month in May, during which the community joined us to plant nearly 1,000 trees and plants across our city.”
What is National Tree Day?
First launched in 1996, National Tree Day is Australia’s largest community tree planting event, encouraging people to take an active role in caring for their local environment. Every year, hundreds of thousands of Australians come together to plant millions of trees and shrubs, helping to restore local ecosystems and green our urban areas.
Greening the city
The City of Perth has set an ambitious target to expand the city’s tree canopy to 30 per cent by 2036. Over the past financial year alone, more than 600 trees and 6,300 plants have been planted across the city, with community involvement at the heart of these efforts. Perth was also internationally recognised as a Tree City of the World in 2024 for its ongoing efforts to celebrate, promote, and enhance its urban forest.
