BOOM! The Perth Wildcats get their first win on the board after an epic fight in overtime!

The first game of the season in THE JUNGLE (Perth Arena) did not disappoint, with the Wildcats defeating the Taipans in a thriller. The lads in red turned up the heat in front of a mammoth home crowd of 12, 701 passionate supporters. The arena was absolutely buzzing! #RedArmy

screen-shot-2016-10-09-at-10-29-34-amEx-Melbourne United and Adelaide 36er Lucas Walker played his first game for the Cats, and it took me a little while to get used to seeing him in red! Angus Brandt was impressive and finished with two massive blocks and a big dunk. However, it was new import Jaron Johnson who was the hero for the Cats.

screen-shot-2016-10-08-at-9-30-13-pmAfter a solid first half from the Wildcats, the Taipans came in to the third quarter with all guns blazing and propelled themselves into the lead. The crowd were on the edge of their seats in the final stages of the fourth, with the Cats down by 3 points. Jaron Johnson received the ball from Damian Martin with 0.8 seconds on the clock and dropped the crucial three-pointer that took the game into overtime.

Check it out below:

The Cats defence in OT was tremendous, allowing Johnson and fellow imports Jameel McKay and Casey Prather to step it up another notch in attack. The Wildcats played their best basketball of the season in the 5 minutes of OT, and completely overran the Taipans, defeating them by 10 points.

screen-shot-2016-10-08-at-9-25-45-pmJohnson starred with 26 points (5-of-6 from three-point range), Prather finished with an awesome 23 points, six assists and five rebounds and McKay was dangerous inside with 14 points. Cats Captain Damian Martin was outstanding as always, with 6 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals.

The next Perth Wildcats game is at Perth Arena against the New Zealand Breakers on Friday 14 October at 6:30pm WST. Don’t miss it!
