Don’t Miss Out on Winter Lights Festival 2016

There’s a great excuse to come and play in Perth City this winter – with the Winter Lights Festival – part of the winter-long Winter Arts Festival.

At Council House and around Brookfield Place – discover multiple night activations – evenings in July and August.

Be treated to inspired displays along St Georges Terrace, while you duck into some of Perth’s best restaurants, cafes and cocktail bars.

Get together with you friends or work colleagues and spend an evening on the Terrace.

I started my evening across the road from Brookfield Place for the Winter Lights Projections – 5.30pm to Midnight every night.

These projections were “inspired by the theme ArtsBeat,” said Joey Wong, from Lux Events, as I waited for light show to start.

“We combined music and arts to create an animation that brings out the cornerstone of Brookfield Place, Art Set Free,” she said.

Viewers are engaged visually through the 5-minute animation and interactive drumming and particles generator, where you can manipulate the lightshow in real time.

After some fun on the drums, it was time to explore some of the other activations.

Enter the precinct to discover a parked luxury Q70, surrounded by an aura of lights. Very cool.

As you walk toward the east end of Brookfield Place, you’ll see ‘The Dresses’ by French artist Tae Gon Kim – an ethereal work on display in the lobby at Tower 1. Further on down was Jump Light; an interactive activity celebrating movement and joy.

Also scheduled across the festival is ‘Music and Light’ in the foyer of Tower 1 – where opera, jazz and contemporary artists perform in incredible white gowns with light projections by VJ Zoo.

Print Hall

After the show and exploration of the precinct, we head for pre-dinner drinks and bar snacks at Print Hall. We found one of Australia’s most comprehensive wine lists, a range of boutique beer, fantastic cocktails and bar food and a fantastic atmosphere.

Print Hall boasts one of Australia's best wine lists.

It was a cold night, so red wine was the order for most of us. From the kitchen, we feasted on fried chicken, freshly cooked prawns, and Paul’s Smalls – a collection of Perth’s finest cold cuts from butcher Paul Marinovich.

After the winter feast, it was time for post-dinner drinks. Onto 20’s style carnival bar Bobèche, for popcorn and teapot cocktails. There we found the very best cocktail artists in town; a cosy and friendly atmosphere, playing 1920’s and 30’s French and southern US Jazz tunes. We had the Long Island Iced Tea, serving 5. The popcorn is free.

To cap the night off – we take a stroll down the Terrace, to check out Council House. All July you will see works produced by Amy Perejuan-Capone, Emma Buswell and Melissa McGrath. After a few minutes, we retreat across the road to the old Treasury Buildings.

Petition

We head for a quick nightcap at Cathedral Square; to Petition Beer Corner. We found some of the best boutique beers in Australia. We tasted Eagle Bay Cacao Stout matched with incredible Sue Lewis chocolates. The night is late, but despite the cool night, we’re dry, warm and happy.
