Coles & Woolworths to launch a dedicated shopping hour for the elderly and people with a disability.

Coles & Woolworths are set to introduce a great initiative on Tuesday (Woolworths) and Wednesday (Coles) by implementing temporary measures to prevent panic-buying by the Coronavirus pandemic affecting the elderly and people with a disability.

How it works

Starting Tuesday, stores across the country will be open from 7am exclusively for the elderly and those with disabilities to do their shopping without excessive crowds before opening to everyone else at 8am.

Woolworths Supermarkets Managing Director Claire Peters said: “While we’ll continue to do our very best to restock our stores during this period of unprecedented demand, we know many of our elderly customers have been missing out on essential items when they shop.

“This temporary measure will give them, and those with a disability, the opportunity to shop before our stores officially open – helping them obtain the essential items they need most in a less crowded environment.

“We continue to encourage all Australians to be mindful of those in our communities who might need extra help at this time. Now – more than ever – we need to be kind to each other, especially to those most vulnerable.

“We’d like to thank our customers for their patience and apologise for any inconvenience caused by the revised opening hours.”

The new hours will run until at least Friday and those needing to go in early will need a relevant concession card.

Woolworths will be releasing full terms and conditions and any store that might be excluded will be available on the woolworths.com.au website later today.

Coles recently released a statement also confirming a Community Hour.

Coles supermarkets will temporarily change their trading hours to open 7am to 8pm on weekdays, with the first hour of trade open exclusively to customers who hold a government-issued Pensioner Concession Card, Commonwealth Seniors Health Card, Companion Card and Health Care Card. Once this hour is complete, all other customers will be invited through the doors to complete their grocery shop.

So make sure to tell your grandparents and your elderly friends to make sure they can make the most of this great initiative from Coles and Woolworths.
