So Media Group Offers Western Australian Brands Alternative Advertising Opportunities

Perth new media start-up So Media Group (publisher of this website) acknowledges today the Australian Consumer Competition Commission (ACCC) decision to approve the takeover of PerthNow.com.au and Sunday Times newspaper by Seven West Media (SWM).

In a statement explaining the decision, the ACCC’s suggested advertisers have more opportunities to reach audiences on “digital media” – a key finding of the merger approval.

So Media Group – owners of So Perth and Tweet Perth – believes the ACCC is right to suggest brands in WA have more opportunities to reach local audiences, as print media declines and independent online players emerge.

“Most of the advertisers we spoke to … are spending less on print newspapers than a few years ago and are finding alternative ways of reaching target audiences, including via digital media,” ACCC chairman Rod Sims said.

So Media Group sees both challenges and opportunities for the local industry in the aftermath of the ruling.

“We are concerned the merger may result in less diversity in the Perth media landscape and job losses in newsrooms, however we also see great opportunity for new media networks to flourish,” Ryan Northover, Co-Founder of So Media Group said.

So Perth, reaches hundreds of thousands of Western Australians every week, across SoPerth.com.au and affiliated social networks, including TweetPerth.

The So Perth network also includes a coalition of dozens of independent Perth content creators and influencers.

“We invite local advertisers looking for alternative media opportunities to learn more about So Media Group and our affiliated influencers,” Co-Founder Adam Barrell said.

Through So Media Group, Perth brands can reach and engage more Western Australians, in more diverse, authentic and micro-targeted ways, at a lower cost to major mainstream media outlets.

SoPerth.com.au and associated social media accounts publishes and aggregates innovative content aimed at Western Australians aged 18 – 39 and allows brands to reach a diverse audience of independent bloggers, social influencers and websites. The network is set to expand to other Australian territories in the near future.

So Media Group is co-founded by Adam Barrell and Ryan Northover.
