The 2015 Startup WA Ecosystem report

A comprehensive report on Western Australia’s startup system has been released, showing enormous growth in the local startup economy.

The report shows WA is home to more than 335 active startups and employs nearly 3,000 people.

Since 2011, local startups have raised more than $100 million in funds.

The 2013 version of the report was first commissioned by the City of Perth.

That report identified a core of 100 digital and internet-based early-stage startups businesses in Perth.

Since then, the number of WA startups has grown to 335 active players – a stunning 235% increase.

The 2015 report was a joint venture between the WA Department of Commerce -Industry and Innovation and the City of Perth. It was launched in collaboration with Spacecubed in the Perth CBD.

Major takeouts from the report:

“Of these 420 startups, a wide range of market focus was evident, with particular clusters emerging in eCommerce, Fin-tech, Healthtech, Resource-tech, Education-tech and more unexpectedly in areas such as Gaming and Human Resources.

“Product and technology types were diverse, ranging from mobile applications and machine learning to 3D printing. Technologies did however seem inclined to less complex technologies rather than more complex emerging technologies such as drones, advanced robotics and machine learning.”

“The early stage technology industry in Western Australia is still in it’s infancy with a few breakout successes that have managed to overcome regional isolation and sparse support.

Nevertheless, Western Australia has a promising level of engagement in some of the most innovative new technologies coming to market”
