Arguably one of the best things to order at any pub, there’s no denying that we here in Perth have a love affair with the humble steak sandwich. The competition is fierce, the offerings varied.

But we think we’ve tracked down some of Perth’s best steak sandwiches – best enjoyed with an ice-cold drink to wash it down.

1. Karalee on Preston

Snagging the award for WA’s best steak sandwich in 2014, 2017, and 2019, Karalee on Preston’s black Angus steak sandwich continues to reign supreme as a solid offering to this day.

It stands apart with its stone-baked Turkish bread base, char-grilled scotch fillet, crispy maple bacon, Egmont cheese, beetroot relish, rocket, and fresh Spanish onion. Is your mouth watering yet? Ours definitely is.

2. Indian Ocean Brewing Company

Wrapping your hands around a steak sandwich from Mindarie’s Indian Ocean Brewing Co while looking out over the water is about as good as it gets on a sunny Saturday.

Their stack oozes beetroot relish and mustard aioli that coats a stellar black Angus sirloin topped with cheddar and salad. Add an egg and bacon in for even more finger-licking wow factor.

3. The Carlisle Hotel

Victoria Park’s The Carlisle Hotel has had their steak sandwich nominated for WA’s best in 2017, 2018 and 2019 – so it had to make this list.

MSA grade scotch fillet, spices, and all the accompaniments your heart could ever want included are combined inside warm Turkish bread. Served with delicious fresh chips on the side, it totally hits the spot.

4. Seven Sins

These guys only opened their doors in 2020, and they’re already absolutely killing it in the steak sandwich game.

They’ve made their way into the list of finalists for WA’s best this year and back in 2021, holding their own against some of the most established favourites. The fillet steak with bacon, swiss cheese and tomato chutney is absolutely worth a trip out to the hills.

5. The Merrywell

The Merrywell is a regular when it comes to discussion on Perth’s best steak sandwiches.

The purists out there might tell you that a good steak sandwich needs to be traditional, but The Merrywell at Crown Perth is here to prove them wrong.

Their ‘Merry Mex Sanga’ is the ultimate feed, with salsa Roja marinated Wagyu beef, baby cos lettuce, fresh salsa ingredients, and Mexican-style cheese on a custom-made jalapeno and corn panini alongside waffle fries dusted with smokey chilli salt and chipotle crema.

Yep, there’s a lot going on here, but it all just works and works darn well.

6. The Byford Tavern

Coming in hot as a finalist for 2022, Byford Tavern is a friendly local hang making a mark in the steak sandwich department.

Their Melaleuka farm steak sandwich features chermoula spiced Melt steak, streaky bacon, marinated tomatoes, swiss cheese, fire-roasted red capsicum, crispy onions, rocket, BBQ sauce and housemade aioli all neatly stacked in a Turkish panini. Drool.

7. W. Churchill

A little less casual and a little more class, W. Churchill has captured the hearts of many city workers with their era-inspired charm and antique touches – but they still perfect the good old steak sandy.

Black Angus rump, onion jam, cheese, aioli and oh-so-good smokey BBQ sauce await you on a plate with shoestring fries on the side, then you can wash it down with one of their 100-something gins behind the bar.

8. The Melbourne Hotel

You’ll find The Melbourne Hotel in the heart of the city with a fresh new look and a little nod to the past.

You can grab their West End Steak Sanga in the pub section with Angus beef striploin, crispy bacon, grilled onion, rocket, beetroot, hickory sauce and house tangy mayo for the perfect lunchtime feed to fuel you up.

9. Mary Street Bakery

One of Perth’s favourite powerhouse cafes, Mary Street Bakery is also serving up one of Perth’s best steak sandwiches.

They have the upper hand thanks to their incredible and wildly popular bread, and there are a few different versions floating around depending on which joint you head to.

Highgate’s version with onion jam, caper tarragon, mayo and cheddar slaw puts one spin on the classic sandy, but then there’s West Leederville’s simple option with onion jam, aioli, cheese and potato crisps on the side.

Or check out Claremont’s with smoked tomato, cheese, cos, onion and fries to go with.

My oh my, how can we even begin to decide?

10. Picabar

The buzzy courtyard of Northbridge’s Picabar is undoubtedly one of our favourite hangs for a drink or two, and their classic steak sandwich lives up to all expectations.

They do it in a special for just $28 with a pint, and it’s got all the good ingredients you’d expect – scotch fillet, bacon, onion jam, cheese and aioli.

11. The Last Local

The old-fashioned vibes and electric atmosphere at Last Local draw in a crowd on the regular, not to mention their huge portion sizes and surprisingly delicious menu of cocktails.

But what we really want to get our hands on here is their steak sandwich options. The famous steak sandwich features seared scotch fillet, crispy bacon, Swiss cheese, caramelised onions, salad and beer battered chips on the side, or you can try their award-winning French dip steak sandwich.
