Wassup Dog – Gourmet Hot Dogs

There’s a new kid on the block in East Perth, and it serves gourmet hot dogs. Originally established as a New York-style hot dog cart in Fremantle, Wassup Dog has now recently opened its own little bistro on Royal Street (just look for the human-sized hot dog mascot or the bright red bicycle outside), and prides itself on serving market fresh cuisine, including 100% organic beef sausages.

It’s a cosy, intimate space with eclectic furnishings, and exposed brickwork gives it an almost warehousey feel. Those wanting to dine in (as opposed to the takeaway or delivery options) can choose from rustic wooden booths along the side wall, window-facing bar stools, or even a small street-front alfresco area. The general vibe is cruisy and casual, enhanced by the old-school tunes playing in the background.

My friend and I popped in for a quick Saturday night bite. After much deliberation over the extensive menu (there are 11 types of hot dogs with fun names like “Snoop’s Dogs” and “Chicken Dawg”, a make-your own meatball option, and 4 different types of salads), I went with the unconventional “Vegan Dog”, while my friend went with “The Frenchman”. It’s friendly, over-the-counter service, with the dogs brought out to you.

My Vegan Dog, made from a fresh wholemeal bun, mixed lettuce, homemade vegetarian sausage with pumpkin, sweet potatoes and coriander, plus a sautée of capsicum, onion and corn olive oil salt and pepper, smashed avocado and homemade vinaigrette, was delicious. It was filled with flavour (special mention must go to the vinaigrette), and left you feeling satisfied (but not stodgy) afterwards. It also came with hand-cut chips, which were not at all greasy, and were dusted with tasty herbs.

My friend’s “The Frenchman”, which contained a homemade beef sausage, WA cheddar, goat’s cheese, Camembert and apricot jam, looked equally sumptuous, brimming with creamy cheese. He walloped it down.

We were honestly so full afterwards that we didn’t even try their desserts, but for those interested, they offer espresso tiramisu, berry cheesecake, warm apple crumble and a chocolate fudge cake.

It is also worth noting that they are open for breakfast too, with a separate menu including your choice of eggs, special “breaky dogs” and granola, among other options.

For good-value, casual cuisine in a friendly, laid-back setting which combines American swag with Euro flair, I’d definitely recommend giving Wassup Dog a go.
