The modern fusion-Asian cuisine and cocktails of Emily Taylor have captured our hearts for a while now, and the crew behind it all have something new in the works.

Sailing For Oranges will step onto the already thriving Fremantle eats and drinks scene in mid-November, bringing local and delectable seaside fare in a space of casual Mediterranean coast feels.

It’s opening on Freo’s iconic cappuccino strip (near the markets), which has previously been home to a few different tenants like Kahuna Brewing Co, Pappa Luigi’s, and Mad Monk Brewery. Sailing For Oranges plans to have the section of the ground floor converted into a lively Mediterranean ‘Bar & Cocina’, and the group’s General Manager Tim Buckton said it will cater to all sorts of crowds coming through.

“We are on the strip, so we want to be accessible to the breakfast, lunch and dinner crowd. After dinner we will also appeal to those that want to go out for a bit of fun within a more settled environment than what you might experience in some of the traditional bars in the area.”

Some of the highlights of the new space will include a raised street-side alfresco deck, plenty of private hideaways, an upstairs function space, and a roof structure above allowing wining and dining to continue all year round while watching the world go by.

Now, of course, the most important details lie in the carefully curated menu of drinks and delights they have planned. Think fried calamari, zingy tahini and lemon, patatas bravas, Fremantle octopus, pintxos, tapas and share plates of locally sourced ingredients conjured up by Executive Chef Danny Feng (Hearth and Wildflower) paired with jugs of sangria, Spanish wines, and citrus cocktails. Drool!

The name ‘Sailing For Oranges’ follows the theme of taking namesakes from ships as Emily Taylor did, taking its inspiration from the ‘free settlers’ ship called Sophia that sailed to Fremantle in 185O. The journey was long and hot, and legend has it that one of the sails was pinned up and filled with seawater while guests bathed and enjoyed eating oranges from the Ship’s larder.
