Perth has famously produced some of the world’s best and biggest music acts with the likes of Birds of Tokyo, Tame Impala, and Eskimo Joe all hailing from the state.

Many of these bands began performing at local watering holes before becoming well-known names and touring all over the world. If they happen to be in the state, some artists return to their old stomping grounds for special performances.

Here are some of the best venues in Perth that offer live music and may dish up the next big household name.

The Bird

Featuring rock bands and DJs, The Bird hosts live music most Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights.

It melds casual backyard hipster vibes with live music, presenting the perfect place to see a cool new band or spend Sunday arvo.

The rear has been decked out with op-shop couches and repurposed armchairs for those looking for a place to rest their feet and just enjoy the music.

Happy hour runs from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm with $9.00 wines and $2.00 off regular tap beers. Otherwise, share a bottle of bubbles or try our personal favourite, the apple crumble cocktail with vanilla, vodka, elderflower, cinnamon, and apple.

Grab a bite at Lucky’s Tuck Shop with pub staples like burgers, fries, and buttermilk fried chicken wings. There’s even a beyond cheeseburger and buffalo fried cauliflower for vegetarians and vegans.

Jack Rabbit Slim’s

Catering to the late-night crowds, Jack Rabbit Slim’s has come to be known as Perth’s premiere live music space and a sought-after stop on many national tours.

Catch a live performance from international and local Australian artists every weekend then party into the early morning with a DJ spinning indie, dance, and hip-hop music until 5:00 am.

Rosemount Hotel

Iconic Perth pub, the Rosemount Hotel, was one of the first places in Perth to support original artists – and it still does with a band or DJ performing most nights.

Every Saturday, the Rosemount hosts Social Saturdays featuring DJs spinning unique and classic tunes to fulfil a range of social inclinations. The event is free and runs from 2:00 pm to late.

Head down on New Year’s Eve for the Dr Noggin Floggin NYE Festival with the Psychedelic Porn Crumpets and guest DJs.

The Rosemount also hosts Fringe World festivals every January and February so look out to see performance times.

It remains the go-to stage in Western Australia for touring and local bands with the likes of Tame Impala, Bernard Fanning, and Kitty, Daisy & Lewis gracing the stage.

Mojos Bar

Described as the all-you-can-eat equivalent of live music venues, Mojos Bar rocks live music throughout the week.

It hosts a wide variety of music genres from obvious to obscure, local to foreign, and new to old.

Mojos is a favourite spot amongst Perth music junkies and has hosted bands just starting out, local superstars, and national and international acts.

Homegrown talent such as Birds of Tokyo, Tame Impala, San Cisco, and Spacey Jane have graced the stage.

The first Friday of every month brings Mojos infamous ‘Fisherman Stylee’ dance for all things reggae while Mondays are open mic night. Wednesdays host Sweetman Sounds with the best and freshest WA acts on offer.

The Ellington Jazz Club

The venue focuses more on performances and the music with a relaxed atmosphere and a sit-down table setting – perfect for winding down after work or for those who want to be swept up in some smooth jazz music.

You can become a member with a range of membership options available including the Duke/Duchess Membership and the Jazz Standard Membership.

Members receive free entry for local acts, a discount on door prices, discounts at the gift shop, priority booking for tickets, and access to a loyalty rewards program.

The Ellington also hosts Fringe World shows so be sure to keep an eye out for what’s coming up.
