TORUK – The First Flight is a live immersive multimedia spectacle that brings to the stage the breathtaking world of James Cameron’s AVATAR like you have never seen it before.

Through a riveting fusion of cutting-edge visuals, puppetry and stagecraft buoyed by a soaring cinematic score, Cirque du Soleil applies its unique signature style to James Cameron’s imaginary world and “makes the bond” between two kindred artistic visions that capture the imagination.

This live immersive experience also bears the distinct signature of directors and multimedia innovators Michel Lemieux and Victor Pilon. It is a living ode to the Na’vi’s symbiotic coexistence with nature and their belief in the basic interconnect- edness of all living things.

Narrated by a “Na’vi Storyteller” and populated by unforgettable characters, TORUK – The First Flight is a mythical tale set thousands of years before the events depicted in the film AVATAR, and before any humans ever set foot on Pandora.

Much like the 2009 (gosh has it been that long?) record-breaking film TORUK is a visual wonder. The entire floor and stage area of Perth Arena becomes a digital canvas as over 40 projectors covering a space of 20,000 square feet (five times an IMAX screen!) deliver a gorgeous, living, breathing and changing word of Pandora. As the story unfolds and scenes change the entire landscape shifts from lush forests, to deserts, rivers and even floating mountain peaks. It’s a bloody marvel to see in person.

The costumes, make up and puppetry are equally gorgeous. It’s no small feet to recreate the world of Avatar considering the residents of Pandora were 100% digital on the silver screen. Over 115 costumes were painstakingly created for TORUK with each member of the cast boasting around 3 costume changes throughout.

Of course the signature Cirque athleticism is very much on display with some amazing physical specimens running, bounding, flipping and fighting their way across the arena floor. Rope work is the highlight with these brave souls not just suspended but twirling and flipping high above the floor with not a net to be seen!

While lacking the typical French-Canadian whimsy and quirky charm of the usual Cirque offering TORUK provides pure visual wonder and spectacle in spades. Much like Avatar itself one just has to lose themselves in the aesthetic over the narrative. Just open those eyes wide and take in all the eye candy.
