The Races WA will be popping up again at this year’s Perth Royal Show, with some exciting activities for the little ones to saddle up and get amongst it.

The virtually focused marquee went ahead and snagged the Exhibitor Award for ‘Best Presented Site’ last year, so safe to say we’re expecting big things this time around and it’s a must-add to your family itinerary on the day.

Here are five ways you and the family can enjoy it.

1. Virtual horse racing

The true highlight of the exhibition is the eye-catching virtual horse racing.

A giant six-meter-round digital racecourse features live animation, allowing showgoers to ride alongside some of West Australia’s leading jockeys on their own hobby horse.

2. Ride a mechanical horse

Before you jump into the main event, you can jump on a horse simulator used by professional jockeys to hone your riding skills and practice that technique.

Think bucking bull vibes, but way cooler and less bucking.

3. Horseshoe toss

You and the kids will have your chance to test your aiming skills in a fun round of horseshoe toss.

It’s simply throwing a horseshoe at a nearby stake in the ground and seeing who can get the most stacked.

4. Meet Northerly

Come and get a selfie with a life-size racehorse.

Northerly is considered to be Western Australia’s greatest ever gallopers winning 19 races and $9.3 million in prize money. He was known as the ‘fighting tiger’ for his courageous performances on the track, and his yellow and black racing silks.

Northerly is an inductee in the Australian Racing Hall of Fame and has a special place in the hearts of West Australians. It was recently announced that the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic was renamed the Northerly Stakes to honour a local legend during the revamped Pinnacles Racing Carnival at Ascot Racecourse. The race is run over 1800m on Saturday 3 December 2022 and will see the very best gallopers from the east and west compete for $1.5 million in prize money.

5. Kids fashion on the field

This one isn’t any sort of official fashion comp – just a chance for your little ones to dress up, have fun and strut their stuff.

There will be a small stage set up with props like tutus, crowns, and bow ties for the kids to wear while you snap some adorable shots.

All this fun is completely free, so make sure to give The Races WA a visit at this year’s Perth Royal Show for virtual horse racing, mechanical horse riding and so much more.

Getting your Royal Show tickets

The good news? The McGowan Government has announced they will provide a $2 million package towards Western Australia’s premier community event, the Perth Royal Show, that includes subsidised tickets for all family members.

This means you’ll be getting a 25% discount on ticket prices across all categories, so your ideal family day out just got a whole lot cheaper.

All the tickets will be available exclusively online (meaning no ticket sales at the gates) and you can purchase yours at the Perth Royal Show website
