The $1.86 billion METRONET Forrestfield-Airport link will soon be giving the green light to travellers as it sets out to begin operations on October 9 of this year.

The major project will be the first passenger rail line to Perth Airport, marking a big step in supporting domestic and international tourism by improving access between the city and the airport.

It’s delivering three new train stations at Redcliffe, Airport Central, and High Wycombe, giving a boost to the public transport options available for those in Perth’s eastern suburbs and foothill areas. The Airport Line will also be supported by the addition of 26 new buses joining the existing bus network to connect surrounding suburbs to the new station.

Mr McGowan is of course extremely excited about the METRONET milestone stating;

“October 9 will mark an important milestone in our massive METRONET expansion of Perth’s public transport network.”

“The METRONET Forrestfield-Airport Link will be a game-changer for people in Perth’s eastern suburbs.”

“METRONET is providing the infrastructure our suburbs need, reducing congestion on our roads and delivering thousands of jobs right across Perth.”

It’s anticipated that an average of 20,000 passenger trips will be made each day on the new line in its first year of service, increasing to 29,000 by 2032.

What’s next for METRONET

While that’s all going down, contracts have also been awarded for the next stage of works on the METRONET: Byford Rail Extension and Victoria Park-Canning Level Crossing Removal projects, which are jointly funded by the Australian and WA Governments.

The Byford extension has been given a $625 million contract for its next stage of development and is expected to create better transport connections for Serpentine Jarrahdale.

The $701 million Victoria Park-Canning Level Crossing Removal project will include the replacement of five level crossings at Mint Street, Oats Street, Welshpool Road, Hamilton Street and Wharf Street and four new elevated stations at Carlisle, Oats Street, Queens Park and Cannington.

These projects are expected to create more than 8,500 job opportunities and see Perth’s first major elevated rail through sections of Victoria Park, Canning, and Armadale.

The planned 18-month shutdown of the Armadale Line to facilitate the works is now expected to commence in late 2023.
