Mandurah will welcome a new giant to its popular Giants of Mandurah sculpture trail created by Danish recycle artist, Thomas Dambo.

This yet-to-be-named giant will reside at Coodanup Foreshore, replacing the previous sculpture, Vivi Cirkelstone, which was destroyed by arsonists just weeks after the exhibition launched.

The new giant will be built by and installed with help from the local community. Between May 8th and 16th, volunteers will be invited to assist with the construction. After the giant has been installed, there will be a free family event at Coodanup Foreshore, the date soon to be announced.

“The WA Government and all Western Australians are so pleased that Thomas Dambo has been able to take the time out of his very busy schedule to create a new Giant for Mandurah. The fact that the community will once again come together to help construct and install Thomas Dambo’s latest creation demonstrates how well-loved the Giants of Mandurah are,” Culture and the Arts Minister David Templeman said.

“This latest addition to the Giants of Mandurah outdoor exhibition will bring even more joy to Mandurah residents and visitors alike, and we look forward to welcoming the new Giant to our State.”

Dambo’s first-ever Australian exhibition opened on November 12th, 2022, and encourages visitors to enjoy the outdoors and appreciate the natural surroundings of the Peel region. The traditional custodians of the Peel region, the Bindjared People of the Noongar Nation, have shared stories of the land where each giant is placed.

The journey starts at the Mandurah Visitor Centre, and from there, you can choose your path and order in which to see them. Visitors are free to see the Giants of Mandurah in any order, but there is one direction to not deviate from: “Don’t spoil the game for anyone else.”

The giants have been a major drawcard for Mandurah, with the Visitor Centre welcoming more than 86,000 visitors through its doors since they landed — a 400% increase compared to last year.

Giants of Mandurah will be running through to November 12th, 2023.
