The day has finally arrived, and while Exmouth will become the epicentre of the world’s Total Solar Eclipse attention, it doesn’t mean the people of Perth will miss out.

A Total Solar Eclipse occurs somewhere on Earth approximately every 18 months, making this an incredibly rare occurrence for Western Australia. Today’s astronomical event will mark the first Total Solar Eclipse to occur in WA since the 20th of June, 1974.

What makes this Total Solar Eclipse even more special is that the path will be over some of the more remote parts of Earth. It’s estimated that approximately 375,000 people will be positioned to see a totality/annularity (100%) eclipse — that’s about 0.004% of the world’s population.

Will there be another Total Solar Eclipse in Western Australia

As this is an incredibly rare event, if you’re unable to witness this eclipse, the next one won’t occur until 2028. WA will witness just five more total eclipses in the next 50 years:

  • 22 July 2028: Total Eclipse – North WA
  • 13 July 2037: Total Eclipse – Geraldton
  • 26 December 2038: Total Eclipse – Onslow)
  • 17 December 2066: Total Eclipse – Margaret River, Augusta, Denmark, and Albany)
  • 31 May 2068: Total Solar Eclipse – Perth
