From the 28 of October, James Street in Northbridge is set to become a pedestrian-only zone on Friday and Saturday nights in an effort to make the space safer for families, fun-goers, and local businesses.

The initiative is a result of a partnership between the State Government, WA Police, and the City of Perth, and hopes to discourage anti-social behaviour and violence.

Road closures are scheduled to run for a trial period of one month, which means non-essential vehicle traffic will be diverted away from James Street between William Street and Lake Street during the hours of 6pm – 6am.

The precinct will then be transformed into a pedestrian mall that will replace cars with a range of family-friendly activities and entertainment funded by a State Government.

“Removing traffic congestion will allow for more efficient police movement. This is all about making Northbridge more inviting to families, and extremely hostile to those who think anti-social behaviour is acceptable,” Police Minister Paul Papalia said.

During the vehicle-free hours, designated taxi and ride-share ranks will be set up and patrolled by security near the pedestrian-only zone and local businesses can apply for a free permit to spill out onto the street. No Parking restrictions will commence from vehicles at 4pm, removing all of them from the area by 5pm.
