Perth’s Yagan Square is prepping for a massive makeover, with a five-floor hospitality mecca, beer hall, live music, and a retractable roof ready to take over the space.

WA hospitality company Nokturnl, the brains behind The Beaufort in Highgate and the Old Synagogue in Fremantle, have just signed a 30-year lease for the central CBD sites redevelopment backed by millions of dollars injected from the government.

Similar to the other venues already under their belt, Yagan Square will be turned into a mega-complex of sorts with several bars and eateries and about five different venues holding a capacity of 1,500.

The $8.4 million redevelopment, to be called Stories, will feature a “family-friendly” pub on the ground level with a playground, two restaurants, alfresco areas and a rooftop tavern, a “keg room” showing off the inner workings, a dedicated stage for live music, and beer and wine gardens.

A glass restaurant will also appear on the newly-constructed mezzanine level to seat about 150 people, while a separate sundowner deck will link the new additions to the existing structure with a retractable roof and bifold doors.

The redeveloped venue will maintain the existing Aboriginal artworks and build on the indigenous narrative.

“I want to be on the public record – the previous model of Yagan Square has not worked,” Lands Minister John Carey said in a statement. “Our Government wants Yagan Square to be a vibrant, safe, family-friendly space, constantly buzzing with offerings and activities that attract residents and tourists alike, day and night.”

As part of the revitalisation an exciting program of activations and events is also set to take place over the coming months, including school holiday activities.
