The Force are back with an exciting new brand of rugby.
We are dubbing it the T20 of rugby – Global Rapid Rugby kicks off this Friday night as the Western Force take centre stage at HBF Park against the World XV.
Not only will there be a brand new action-packed style of rugby unleashed for the Sea of Blue
Most importantly though what is Global Rapid Rugby?
Rapid Rugby is a modification of traditional rugby union with the goal of the innovative new laws and competition rules to increase ball-in-play time and reward attacking, free scoring play.
So what are some of these new rules?
Shorter Game Time
Each half will be only 35 minutes in length, making the games 10 minutes shorter than your traditional rugby match. This simple change creates a sense of urgency in a match that players and fans alike will embrace – creating a perfect recipe for rapid rugby.
Power Try
Any try-scoring play that begins inside a
Out of Bounds
Teams no longer have the luxury of kicking the ball out on the full within their defensive 22 to relieve pressure.
Any kick that goes over the sideline on the full will be turned over to the opposition at the point of where the kick was taken from, so keeping the ball in the field of play will be the aim of the game.
10/22 Kicks
Teams can take advantage of the 10/22 rule – best explained in this three-step process:
- Kicks must be taken from between your defensive goal and 10m line with the play starting in this zone
- The ball must land ahead of you within the field of play
- It can bounce as many times as you like but before it goes over the sideline it must take its final bounce within your attacking 22
If successful the attacking team will move down the field and pick up from the point the ball bounces out. This will force coaches to decide how many players to take from their defensive line to limit the impact of attacking kicks.
Rolling Substitutions
Players can be rotated for management or tactical reasons at any time during the match and then return to the action when needed. There will be a maximum of 10 substitutions for each team during a game.
