It is a very exciting time for women’s cricket in Australia, with the first season of Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) kicking off on the weekend. Twenty20 cricket has gained a lot of momentum thanks to the Big Bash competition and cricket fans are flocking to the games in droves. And what could be better than having one BBL competition to follow during Summer? How about having two leagues?! YES! WBBL has launched its first season this weekend, which is a great movement for women’s cricket. It further promotes women in sport at elite levels and gives young girls another option for a sporting career, outlining an additional cricketing pathway.

Sports retail store Rebel has been announced as a major sponsor for the WBBL, which is a fantastic boost for the league. Having a well-known Australian brand on board is great to see and will no doubt be helpful with encouraging young girls to play the game. Another plus for the WBBL is that Network Ten will be televising eight games live on Network Ten’s ONE and all Perth Scorchers matches will be broadcast with live ball-by-ball commentary on 91.3 SportFM.

The Perth Scorchers are the women’s team representing WA, aligning themselves with the men’s league by adapting the same colours and uniforms. Some big international names have joined the Perth Scorchers for the WBBL season debut including the captain of the England women’s cricket team Charlotte Edwards, Deandra Dottin (also known as the “female Chris Gayle”) from the West Indies and White Ferns representative Suzie Bates from New Zealand.
