Teliti the Perth Zoo Orangutan escapes enclosure.

A 5-year old Perth Zoo Orangutan escaped her enclosure on Sunday.

Teliti the orangutan, a curious little primate escaped by jumping up onto a shade sail before making her way to a public walkway by the zoo enclosure.

“That’s a behaviour which is quite unusual for an orangutan…They would normally swing or climb, but jumping is quite an unusual behaviour,” Perth Zoo’s Danielle Henry told ABC News Perth.

Holly Thomspson, from the Perth Zoo primate team said; “like a lot of adventurous five-year-olds, Teliti has taken the opportunity to test her boundaries, but soon realised it was preferable with her orangutan colony.”

“Her calm nature and trust in her dedicated keepers enabled us to quickly secure her in the orangutan night quarters.”

Teliti means to be careful and thorough in Indonesian. Sumatran Orangutants are facing severe threats in the wild, due logging of forests and the destruction of diverse habitats. Another factor is the demand for palm oil and each year more than 1,000 orangutans die as a result of land clearing in Indonesia and other SE Asian nations.
