The Town of Victoria Park plays host to a new and exciting arts season in April and May 2016. Discover what’s on offer below.

“The Arts Season is a brand new way of showcasing the arts in the community,” Town of Victoria Park Mayor Trevor Vaughan said.

“Traditionally we have hosted an Art Awards, but have decided to change things up this year, with an entire season of artistic endeavours happening all around our wonderful Town.”

“The diverse program appeals to a broad range of artistic interests and tastes and encourages many different groups to be involved and appreciate the arts together.”

Busking in the Parklet will showcase a number of local musicians who will pop up at Parklets across Town of Victoria Park as part of the Victoria Park Arts Season.

Shipwrecked Festival

Welcome aboard the Manic Cruise Line Express, where capsizing is the ultimate goal. In 2016 Perth will experience a festival like no other, one that will take you on a journey through the high seas of Western Australia.

The destination is Ship-Wrecked! Music Festival, a mythical water oasis of music, summer and experience. Once you open the bottle, read the map and find the treasure of the Victoria Park Foreshore you will be removed from reality and mesmerised by the underwater existence of Ship-Wrecked! 2016.

The foreshore will be transformed and let you imagine all things are possible including: WA’s largest man-made beach; An underwater village of food, ‘The Buried Treasure Markets’, waterslides & rides to get you in the summer vibe, and the ‘Raftsmanship Arts Centre’ to let your creativity get the best of you. On top of the huge range of activities; you will bear witness to some of the best musical talent known to merman-kind.

Victoria Park Library Mural by Liliana Stafford

Watch the children’s area of the library be transformed by artist and illustrator Liliana Stafford! Liliana will be working her magic during the month of April, so come to the library and watch her at work. Liliana is an award-winning artist, illustrator and writer. During her three years as an abstract artist Liliana has won multiple awards for her paintings, adding to the accolades her twelve literary titles have collected. Most recently Liliana’s painting ‘Still Life’ was Highly Commended in the 2015 South Perth Emerging Artist Exhibition.

Liliana has published 12 books and won several awards including children’s choice, CBC, and Premier’s award. Two of her titles have been published internationally. Amelia Ellicott’s Garden has recently been performed as a play in Townsville and a third season is planned for January 2016.

Face to Face

A Perth International Arts Festival event supported by Visual Arts program partner Wesfarmers Arts.

The John Curtin Gallery presents Face to Face featuring three discrete projects by distinguished artists Shaun Gladwell (Australia), Carsten Höller (Belgium) and Jon Tarry (Australia). It is the first time Höller, who recently represented Belgium at the 2015 Venice Biennale, has exhibited in Australia and it also premieres new work from Gladwell and Tarry. Set in the Congo, Paris and Perth, the artists unravel the intoxicating power of performance, solitary or in front of a mass crowd, competitively or privately.

Interactive Skateboard event & Film Screening (as part of PIAF)

As part of Face to Face the John Curtin Gallery will present an interactive public program and this is part of the Arts Season.

The public program will feature two skateboard workshops and free lm screenings that will attract a young audience and offer an accessible route of engagement for the exhibition.

The workshops, which will be coordinated by the team from Skate Sculpture, are scheduled for 10am – 12pm Wednesday
13 and 20 April. The workshops will take place in the concourse immediately outside the John Curtin Gallery. It will include a pop up skate park and skills sessions that participants can register for. The free lm screenings will include arthouse and cult skate documentaries such as Beautiful Losers, All This Mayhem and Dogtown and Z-Boys as well as the possible inclusion of other lm works by Shaun Gladwell.

Brewed Laughter

Fancy a few beers and a good laugh? Join our comedian/beer- drinking experts as they take you on a comedic voyage of the frothy senses!

Part comedy show, part beer tasting, and part game show, Vulture Culture and The Dutch Trading Co will provide you with the most entertaining beer tasting around. Each hour-long session is hosted by a different comedian and features six different beers. Beer lovers are welcome to come in early to enjoy our Dutch-inspired food menu items designed to share.

Charlotte O’Shea Creative Arts Youth Workshop

Charlotte O’Shea is facilitating the following free art workshops as part of the Arts Season:
1. 3D sculpture projects: a total of six workshops to design and build a 3D wall-mounted artwork. No previous experience needed. Appropriate for all ages over eight years. We
will be using newspaper, plastic bottles, cardboard and conventional art materials. Materials provided.

Snapshot Poetry with author Sioban Timmer

For kids aged seven – 12 years.
Bring the kids to the Victoria Park Library during the school holidays to try their hand at writing poetry using their five senses and photographs.
A great way for kids to express themselves and explore being creative by using their imagination to determine how what they see would sound, taste, feel and smell.
Sioban Timmer is a West Australian writer who produces stories and poetry for adults and children. Sioban has written the children’s book ‘Toughen Up, Princess’.
Due to popular demand, bookings will only be taken at the Library, up to four weeks in advance, and are not confirmed until payment has been received at the Library.

Let the Memory Live Again

One of the greatest musicals of all time, CATS, is returning to Perth. Following a triumphant season in London’s West End, the acclaimed revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s legendary musical is set to have audiences purring with pleasure when it comes to Crown Theatre in April 2016.

Town of Victoria Park Art Collection

The Town currently supports Western Australian art and artists through an art acquisition and commissioning program. The Town adopts a multi-criteria approach to its art collection, acquisitions, commissions and awards.
The Town’s Art Collection comprises of approximately 70 artworks, with a primary focus on the work of Western Australian artists. Artworks span a wide range of media; over half of the Collection consists of paintings, with the remainder of the Collection including sculpture, drawings, ceramics, print works, photographs and textiles.
This exhibition will showcase a selection of the Town’s Art collection while introducing public artworks located across the Town of Victoria Park.

John Hughes Slopestyle

ANZAC Day 2016 Commemoration

The Harold Hawthorne Community Centre will be running a poetry competition to coincide with their ANZAC Day Ceremony in 2016.
This competition is open to community members. Entries will be showcased in the lead up to the ANZAC Day Ceremony. Winners will receive a small prize and have the opportunity to have their poems read out (by dignitaries) at the Ceremony.

We will also have the ‘Silver Threads Band’ performing at the Ceremony.
There will also be an exhibition titled ‘Reflections of the Past – celebrating the history of the Town of Victoria Park’.
Dating from 1907 to 1967, the photographs on display throughout Harold Hawthorne Community Centre offer a fascinating glimpse into our past and a vision of life in the Town’s early days.

Book Cover Illustration with Alison Mutton

For kids aged six-12 years.
Come to the Victoria Park Library during the school holidays and learn how illustrators create exciting book covers and then create one yourself in this hands-on workshop.
Alison Mutton is a freelance illustrator based in Perth. Alison specializes in children’s illustration and, among other books, has illustrated ‘Toughen Up, Princess’ by Sioban Timmer.

Paint-by-Numbers Carlisle Mural Project

Inspired by local flora and fauna, a paint-by-numbers mural will be designed to cover the whole of the Carlisle toilet block. It will be an opportunity for the local community to watch the artwork being created, participate in its creation whilst providing an opportunity to meet and chat with other locals.
The theme of the artwork will be a celebration of nature, focusing on Western Australian birds and flowers.
“Western Australia is one of 15 world-wide environmental hotspots in the world, with most species being endemic to small regions of the state. Our flora and fauna are beautiful and unique – an element I would like to celebrate in the piece.” Artist Mel McVee.

Community Mandala & Wish Upon a Seed Perth Garden Festival

In alignment with the Perth Garden Festival, Western Australia’s most prestigious garden and outdoor lifestyle event, AWESOME Arts will facilitate two creative engagement workshops:
Community Mandala:
Using foliage and flowers from native Australian plants, community members are invited to work with a professional artist to create a beautiful mandala at the Perth Garden Festival.
Wish Upon A Seed:
Children and their families will be given the opportunity to learn about an iconic plant by planting a seed and creatively decorating a paper pot. Children are invited to make a wish for the future
as they plant their seed. They can even take their freshly planted wishing seed home to care for it as they watch their plant (and hopefully their wish) come to life!

‘Staff Room’ by the School of Design and Art Curtin University

Staff Room is a showcase of contemporary works by the staff and postgraduates of the School of Design and Art at Curtin University. This popular annual event is a collaborative show that exhibits the diverse creative practices of WA’s prominent art and design educators.

For 2016, the School of Design and Art looks forward to partnering with the Town of Victoria Park and to share another year’s collection of creative work with the broader community.

Tuxedo Junction Vocal Ensemble

Tuxedo Junction Vocal Ensemble will perform a concert of choral music at Harold Hawthorne Community Centre.
This event will be open to the general public with multiple musical genres covered to suit all.
Tuxedo Junction Vocal Ensemble has been performing since 1987 and are currently led by experienced Perth musician Simone Bishop.
Tuxedo Junction Vocal Ensemble sing in 4-8 part harmony in a wide variety of musical styles to suit the occasion including pop and rock, Broadway and movies, choral standards from all eras, folk and world music, and classical music.
To coincide with this performance, Harold Hawthorne will be offering a three-course lunch special for $10 from 12pm.

Showcase of Kent Street Senior High Student Artwork

An exhibition of fashion from students at Kent Street Senior High School will be displayed at the Town of Victoria Park Library.
Fashion and Design at Kent Street offers a program of study through Years 7 to 12 and was established in 1991. The course was developed to encourage creativity in young men and women.
This exhibition provides an insight into a course that provides students with both general vocational skills and skills related to employment in the fashion and design industry.

Express Yourself

‘Express Yourself’ will involve a call out to the community to submit works in any creative form.
Works will be accepted from any individual, group, community group, business, school etc.
‘Express Yourself’ will also feature the unveiling of the public artwork created for the Centre by the community as part of the Creative Arts Workshops collaborative project held at the centre from 9 – 29 April.
In addition to an exhibition that will remain in situ for the two week duration, Victoria Park Centre for the Arts will also undertake an Open Day on Sunday, 29 May which will invite musicians, performers, ephemeral works etc. to take part.

Arts Market and Buskers Festival

Victoria Park Centre for the Arts and the Vic Park Farmers Market on John McMillan Reserve will join together to celebrate the vibrancy of art and culture in the Victoria Park Community. On Sunday, 29 May, the weekly Sunday Market will expand to include:
a variety of arts and crafts stalls showcasing the talent of Western Australian artists and craftspeople
a “Buskers Festival” which will invite musicians, performers, ephemeral works etc. to take part
an open day at the Arts Centre featuring the “Express Yourself” exhibition and the unveiling of the public artwork created for the Centre by the community as part of the Creative Arts Workshops collaborative project held at the centre 9 – 29 April.
