On Australia Day eve we saw the mighty Wildcats take down the Cairns Taipans in front of the #RedArmy at Perth Arena.

Not only was it a great win for the Wildcats, it was also a very significant game for the residents who were impacted by the recent bushfires in the South West. The Wildcats and the Taipans had their game-worn jersey’s auctioned off and all proceeds were donated to the Lord Mayor’s Distress Relief Fund to help out those in need after the bushfires wiped out not just homes, but the entire suburb of Yarloop. What a wonderful gesture from both teams. Great work lads.

Nate Jawai got the Cats off to a good start with a couple of early dunks before Jermaine Beal let loose in the second half and finished as Perth’s top scorer with 15 points. The game went back and forth and the Cats were grabbing some good leads, just to be chased back up by the Taipans who weren’t giving up without a fight.

Skipper Damian Martin was a pleasure to watch as always, and not just on the defence. He and vice captain Greg Hire both had season high point tallies, Martin finishing on 11 points and Hire with 14 points, both hitting a couple of handy 3’s to boost the score and lift the Cats to victory. The team stepped up in the scoring department in the absence of Casey Prather who was watching on from the sidelines with hamstring tightness.

A big congratulations is in order for veteran Wildcat Shawn Redhage who took to the court to play his 350th NBL game. He showed us just how good he is, and when he hit two big 3’s the crowd responded by filling the Arena with near-deafening cheers!
