The 2019 Small Bar Awards, presented by the Small Bar Association of WA, celebrate excellence in WA’s small bar industry.

Now in its 8th year, the Awards aim to recognise the contribution of the small bar community to WA’s hospitality sector.

In addition to the four hallmark categories, ‘Best Small Bar – Critic’s Choice’; ‘Best Small Bar – People’s Choice’; ‘Best New Small Bar’ and ‘Best Regional Small Bar’, the Awards will this year introduce an exciting new category, ‘Smells Like A Small Bar’.

This category celebrates the incredible venues across our state that don’t hold a small bar licence but act like one. The ambience, service, decor and essence of what makes a small bar great are able to be felt even though the capacity may be greater than that of a small bar.

President of the Small Bar Association of WA, Wesley Eate, said “We’re excited at introducing a new category this year. It’s an ode to all the venues repping the small bar ethos. Places with a focused style and offering and a personal touch are who this new award is for; even if they’re bigger than the small bar capacity of 120 people.”

Each year, voting is in two stages: a peer vote from those within the industry who hold a small bar license to produce a shortlist of up to six bars per category; and a vote from both the public and critics for each respective award. Voting criteria includes product offering, including food if relevant; service; décor; ambience and responsible service of alcohol. Public votes run from 24 May – 5 June.

This year’s judges are acclaimed sommelier, Emma Farrelly (State Buildings); global hotelier, Rob Weeden (Pan Pacific Hotels Group); food, drink and travel writers Max Veenhuyzen (Australian Gourmet Traveller, Broadsheet) and Fleur Bainger (STM, Australian Traveller); Georgia Moore (The WA Good Food Guide) and freelance wine consultant, Rachael Niall.
