Finally giving locals a much-needed sit down restaurant in the area where Scarborough meets Wembley Downs and Doubleview.

General Public Food Co – now open, adding yet another new venue to the evolving Scarborough scene.

General Public Food Co’s open kitchen will serve a range of specialty sourdough pizzas, sides and salads for lunch and dinner, seven days a week. A coffee window will be open each morning serving takeaway coffee and baked goods.

Owners Evan & Sarah Hewitt aim to create a central gathering place for the community, whether it’s the morning coffee run, afternoon drinks, or a long lunch or dinner, “We wanted to create a cornerstone in the community, where people proudly call it their local, and everyone feels at home.” Evan explains.

The eats

For a long time Sarah had noticed “The neighbourhood is full of twenty somethings who love to enjoy great food and drink, who don’t always want to travel to the city to get a certain standard of food and drink. There’s also young families who don’t want the hassle of parking or public transport to enjoy a good meal with their babies or children, so we’ve really tailored the menu to please discerning foodies right through to fussy kids.”

The kitchen creates fresh takes on classic pizzas as well as original inventions, showcasing seasonal and local ingredients, with the menu changing often to reflect that.

The drinks

Beer punters will enjoy the range of rotating local craft beers on tap, with the unique option of getting a growler of beer for the table. Evan found “the interest in craft beers keeps growing and growing, with a wide range now available, but not many venues catering for sophisticated beer drinkers at the same depth wine drinkers receive.”

But of course it’s not just the beer lovers who will be happy, there will be a range of local and international wines available too.
