Stirling Day Trip: A Day Of Eats And Exploration

Perched eight kilometres north of Perth’s central business district, the City of Stirling covers an area of around 100 square kilometres. Spanning across 30 suburbs, it’s the largest local government area by population in Western Australia and the 17th largest in the country.

Home to 440 parks, 330 playgrounds, and seven kilometres of magnificent coastline, reserves, and surf beaches from Peasholm Street Dog Beach to Watermans Bay, the City of Stirling has so much to offer. From where to dine to what to do, here’s how to spend a day in Stirling.

Stirling Day Trip Itinerary

This day trip itinerary connects you with the best things to do in the City of Stirling. You’ll explore both coastline and bushland, and delight in a bounty of scrumptious eateries along the way.

9:30 am: Coffee & breakfast at Canteen Trigg

Begin your Stirling day trip with a smoothie and breakfast from the rocking beachside espresso and wholefoods café, Canteen Trigg. Perched right on Trigg Beach, the café boasts dreamy ocean views from every angle. Sieve through the menu of smashed avocado, acai bowls, smoked salmon, and poached eggs.

10:30 am: Trigg Bushland Reserve Loop

For a healthy and active start to the day, take a walk through the Trigg Bushland Reserve — a tranquil coastal reserve featuring a small network of walking trails. Take the 3.4-kilometre bush track loop around the reserve to get the blood pumping. The path is predominantly sealed, but there are a few short sandy sections and some steep gravel hills. Make sure you stop and appreciate the mesmerising ocean and Rottnest Island views along the way.

12:00 pm: Enjoy lunch at Island Market Trigg

After an active morning, it’s time to refuel the batteries, and there’s no better place than the bright and airy Island Market Trigg. Characterised by pastel pink accents, neon lights, and gob-smacking ocean views, the beachfront restaurant also scored one hat in the 2020 Australian Good Food Guide Awards for its menu that fuses Middle Eastern and Mediterranean flavours. Centred around seafood and wood roasting, expect share plates including barbecue octopus, wood-roasted chicken, and Shark Bay scallop crudo.

2:00 pm: Watch a movie at Hoyts Karrinyup

Who doesn’t love a day of popcorn and blockbusters at the movies? Head to the recently refurbished Karrinyup Shopping Centre for an afternoon at Hoyts cinema. Try the Bob Marley: One Love film which follows the story of how the Jamaican singer-songwriter overcomes adversity to become the world’s most famous reggae musician. Or, maybe the second instalment of the science fiction film, Dune.

4:30 pm: Delight in seaside sunset drinks

Scarborough is home to an abundance of great places to eat and drink. If you’re in need of some options for your day trip, Scarborough Beach Bar is always a winner. And you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better spot to watch the sunset than Oceans 6019. If you fancy bringing a picnic and drinks, there’s no better place to set up camp than the aptly named Sunset Hill — the expansive grassed area north of the Scarborough Amphitheatre.  You might even hear the applause of locals when the sun disappears!

7:00 pm: Dinner at La Capannina Scarborough

If you’re feeling hunger pangs after a long day of exploration, pick a café or restaurant for dinner along the Scarborough Beach foreshore. Our recommendation is the stylish and absolute oceanfront Mediterranean restaurant, La Capannina. Expect the likes of olives, oysters and burrata, alongside Amelia Park lamb rump, and butter and sage gnocchi.
