Where were you when Australia came from behind to win the 1983 America’s Cup and put an end to America’s 132-year hold on the trophy?

Many Australians remember that day as it ended the longest winning streak in sporting history and the United States’ dominance in the race.

It showed what it means to be a true-blue Aussie, displaying to the rest of the world our ‘never give up’ attitude.

Even Prime Minister at the time Bob Hawke’s response was that of an Australian, stating “Any boss who sacks anyone for not turning up today is a bum!”

2023 marks the 40-year anniversary of the Australia II beating Liberty from the New York Yacht Club, despite being down 1-3 after the first four races.

Limited Edition Gin

Republic of Fremantle - Navy Strength Special Edition Gin
Bottle design inspired by the nautical alphabet

The Republic of Fremantle has released a Limited Release Navy Strength Gin to honour a race that enthralled the nation and inspired a generation of Aussies to challenge the status quo and take on the big guys with bare feet and a winning spirit on innovation.

Republic of Fremantle stays true to traditional navy strength gin with flavours of juniper throughout.

However, their base spirit is distilled from local wine, giving the gin a unique character that is accentuated with a carefully curated botanical selection of refreshingly sweet honeydew and acidic calamansi citrus.

This gives the gin a refreshing taste, perfect to quench the summer thirst.

Even the design of the bottle reflects the race, with the artwork inspired by the nautical alphabet and featuring the 26 flags boats use to communicate on the ocean.

L to R: Navy Strength Gin and Tonic, Apple Southside, Barefoot Challenger

To ensure you make the most of this limited edition release we have included three recipes that can be made with the Republic of Fremantle gin.

Navy Strength Gin and Tonic

For the classic and fan-favourite gin and tonic, mix 30 millilitres of Republic of Fremantle Navy Strength Gin with 120 millilitres of Fever Tree Light Tonic.

Garnish with a ball of honeydew melon to add a burst of freshness.

Apple Southside

For the Apple Southside, mix 40 millilitres of Republic of Fremantle Navy Strength Gin, 25 millilitres of lime juice, 15 millilitres of sugar syrup, six mint leaves, a sliver of green apple, and a dash of saline.

Shake all the ingredients vigorously, double strain, and garnish with a mint leaf for those tropical vibes. This cocktail is perfect for a hot day chilling by the pool.

Barefoot Challenger

The Barefoot Challenger is based on the winning spirit and the barefooted people that won the America’s Cup for the country.

Combine 40 millilitres of Republic of Fremantle Navy Strength Gin, 10 millilitres of Fino Sherry, 20 millilitres of lime juice, 12.5 millilitres of pineapple juice, 15 millilitres of agave syrup, and a dash of saline.

Mix all the ingredients together and finely strain into a tall glass. Pop in a cube of honeydew, garnish with mint, and top with ice and pear soda for a bitter/sweet finish. Alternatively, omit the pear soda to serve as a sour.
