With a fist full of post-June 30 deadlines in front of me I hoped the movie Booksmart would provide some sense of release. I was definitely up for some fun. I can report that the movie delivered on that promise, and my relationships with my clients have remained in tact.

High school friends Amy (Kaitlyn Dever) and Molly (Beanie Feldstein) have been head down working hard all their school lives. With graduation just around the corner they were ready for a big payout. Ready to gloat that they’d out performed their colleagues and were moving on to bigger and better things. But when they hear that some of their less conscientious colleges are on the same path as them, their whole perspective on life gets challenged.

With A-type personalities in full swing, there was only one solution … to cram four years of partying into one night.

The night which starts with trying to find the end of school party that all the cool kids are attending. As you would expect along the way they get themselves into some crazy situations.

One stand out event is when they have their first drug experience. This results in an hilarious Toy Story inspired scenario that delivers some great messages about expectations of the female form. Thinking they’ve morphed into Barbie Dolls their appreciation of their new bodies is a delight. At the other end of the scale is a beautifully shot underwater sequence the suggests there’s substance behind the laughter.

A teenage, female version of The Hangover, with a pinch of Toy Story thrown in, Booksmart is likely to become this generations The Breakfast Club. It’s great to see these stories told from a young female perspective.

A fun coming of age story, Dever does a great job at conveying Amy’s sexual confusion, while Feldstein is a riot in all her Molly nerdy-lameness.

All work and no play makes me a dull consultant, I could do with a night like that, well maybe just a little bit like that.
