The Dry movie is one of those movies where you can’t say too much or you’ll give away the ending. What I can say though is it’s a great Aussie crime, mystery movie well worth seeking out. I really hope you get to see it.

Set on dry Australian farm land, Aaron Falk ( Eric Bana) returns to his hometown to attend the funeral of his childhood friend, Luke Hadler (Martin Dingle Wall). But this is not an easy funeral for Falk, or any of the townsfolk .

It appears that Luke took the lives of his wife and child before taking his own life. A scenario we know too well in Western Australia.

The decade of drought is raised as the catalyst to the murder-suicide, but Falk is not so sure. After leaving the town 20 years prior, Falk became a cop and it is these senses that tell him something is not right.

Though reluctant to look into the case, he is soon up to his neck in things that don’t add up.

Along the way he is reacquainted with old friends, foes and lovers, and it’s not look before his own past and motives are called into question.

The Dry is a good Australian movie featuring many great actors and a well set out intriguing mystery. It touches on friendship, loyalty, family motives, trust, domestic violence, gambling and farming life. But mostly it is about the secrets we keep.

I can imagine many Australian actors jumped at the chance to be involved after they’d read the script. The film is directed by the brilliant Robert Connolly from a script he has co-written with Harry Cripps (co-writer with Tim Minchin).

Bana doesn’t disappoint, as usual.

A warning that the topic may be a bit close to the bone for some WA families. A small shiver went up my spine when the opening murder-suicide premise was revealed.
