Signs a movie has you hooked … when a power outage evacuates the movie theatre and you can’t wait to receive the preview link to find out what happened. The dark psychological premise behind the movie True Things, combined with leading lady Ruth Wilson, had me well and truly hooked.

True Things Movie Review
True Things movie

Kate (Ruth Wilson) is someone I expect a lot of people can relate to, a woman bored by the daily tedium of her office job. We find her working at a job search centre and on her last warning. She’s equally frustrated with the dating scene and has all but given up. Surely there must be more to life?

“More” comes in the form of a cocky ex-prisoner who arrives at her work seeking employment. Known only as Blond (Tom Burke), has a mysterious air, a cheeky smile and nothing to do for the rest of the day. When he asks her out she senses a crack in her boredom. Against character she soon finds herself enjoying a quickie with the stranger in a nearby car park.

Back at work she looks up his details. His phone number and thanks to Google, live coverage of his house.

This is when the power went out. I was left pondering the direction of the movie. Will the stranger turn out to be the escape Kate so desperately craves, or will he become her worst nightmare? Or will she become his?

I had several days to ponder this as I waited for news of how we would see the rest of the movie. I won’t give away the ending but I will say is True Things starts like a grown-ups version of He’s Just Not That Into You. The switches between dreams and reality add an interesting dimension as you have to keep watching. Look out for the scene in the supermarket when she has seconds to pick a bottle of tomato sauce. Ruth Wilson is annoyingly realistic, no wonder she won a Best Actress BAFTA.
