There are some events that make it onto my calendar every year, the Scandinavian Film Festival is one. This year there’s so much happening in Perth at the moment that it’s hard to pack it all in, so I thought I’d give you a heads up about a couple of must see movies during this Scandi Festival.

Small Town Killers Thanks to Scandinavian Film Festival

First up…

A Conspiracy of Faith

This is the third in the series of Department Q films. Having seen the previous two I know this one will be worth it, and I’m even prepared to give up my Sunday afternoon to see it. The film will see Cold Case detectives Carl Mørck (Nikolaj Lie Kaas) and Assad (Fares Fares) reunited “for a shocking case in rural Denmark”. Sounds fine to me.

The investigation begins with the discovery of a literal message in a bottle, written in blood and dated eight years earlier. The message, from a young boy, seems to indicate that he was caught in a religious cult, and it becomes clear that his disappearance was far from an isolated incident – yet all have remained unreported by the community.

The publicity also suggests … “the best opening of a local film in 15 years”, I’ll let you know.

And to keep the balance …

Small Town Killers

I’m a sucker for a black comedy and this one looks like it should be a good’en.

A Danish black comedy about the unforeseen consequences of planning the perfect crime. When the blurb says ‘hints of Coen Brothers absurdity” I’m there.

The story focuses on two tradesmen in a small rural town, who thanks to their moonlighting have developed a substantial nest egg for the future. They both agree that their main obstacles to happiness are their loveless marriages to their wives. After getting into a huge fight with their wives at a couple’s dinner, the men get drunk and hatch what they think is a fiendishly clever solution: hire a Russian contract killer to take out their spouses so they can do with their stash what they want. Well who amongst us hasn’t wanted to do that? No?

Others that sound interesting are:

  • Kings Bay
  • Little Wing.

I hope you get to see some of the Festival, if not make sure you put it on your list for next year. Remember the health benefits of a little bit of Me Time.
