What you want me to review a Kiwi comedy that’s got a link to Taika Waititi? Oh okay then. Baby Done had a lot to live up to, did it pass?

Baby Done tells the story of Zoe (Rose Matafeo), a gun arborist who has her sights set on entering and winning the International Tree Climber Championship. Held in Canada in a few months she’s working hard, climbing the biggest trees she can find. Working with her highly supportive partner Tim (Matthew Lewis) nothing will get in her way.

That is until two little pink strips on a plastic wand say something different. A baby.

While Tim is thrilled, Zoe is less sure. As a couple they are the “fun” ones in their social circle. With a multitude of unfulfilled adventures on their bucket list they are the couple most likely to not settle down. With every bridal or baby shower attended Zoe becomes more and more convinced she is destined to become the World Champion tree climber. What will be her destiny?

Baby Done is a tender, serious, funny exploration of not losing yourself when you become a parent. Rose Matafeo is a delight as Zoe, completely believable as a tree climbing heavily pregnant woman.

The movie provides one of the best birth scenes ever, with fireworks, glitter and security. So too a hilarious example of how not to “take your seat” on a plane. Zoe is the epitome of trying to do everything ‘all by myself’

Baby Done is the movie we need to have right now.

Rating: 3 Stars.
